Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction to episode 7 of Vinland Saga!  Okay, obvious typical grossness of battle aside, this one felt almost lighthearted in tone!  The little general was killing me lol!!  Thorfinn was not going to be held back by anything in his plan to bring back a head and helmet, and Askeladd and co. were not going to be deterred in basically winning the battle for the people who hired them in like 5 minutes!  Watching Askeladd all blinged out in that one scene....it was pretty magnificent!  So are we doing this now?!  Is the duel gonna happen?!  Guess we'll see!  Great episode!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I really like when they lean into the silly over the top anime elements. Like the guy who looks like a toad, or the fact that Thorfinn is some sort of super jumper. (Come to think of it Thors was a super jumper too!) There are multiple reasons why people were stuck in the dark ages. One of those reasons is that people kept trying to grab power for themselves without realizing that banding together would be the smarter bet. That's one of the reasons Vikings were able to have so much success.

The General was a bit over the top for me, he didnt fit right in, maybe there are other over the top characters later, but that was the only thing i didnt like about this episode. The Franks fearing a dragon because of the shipshead was fun. Thorfinn got really good at killing...Thors would not be proud, sadly

The fact that Thorfinn, mentions to Askeladd, that he'd already killed an innumerable amount of people, suggests that Thorfinn, knows that he's debased himself in order to achieve his goal. The last episode with mother & daughter shows that Thorfinn, has a conscience & feels regret, but buries it. It's like he'll endure anything & embrace being a monster to defeat a monster. I guess it's a theme which will always come up in manga/anime that address war with heavy realism:)

Carrying the boat on land genius and tough. Scary men.

Haha it is fun and very different from the usual tone! That's a good point about Thorfinn and also Thors! For such a grounded anime, they do have a few elements that are still a bit out there and whimsical, don't they! Ahhh very interesting, that's a great point about the dark ages. The Vikings got the concept of teamwork long before others did, apparently!!!

I hear you, he definitely contrasted with the usual tone! The shiphead scene was pretty great! And yes, even though I'm happy he's able to take care of himself, it's also quite sad that Thorfinn is such a killer now - exactly the opposite of what Thors wanted!!

kamenriderhime

Interesting point! And very true that it's representative of the war theme in general - to achieve your goal, stop at nothing, even if it means you become as "bad" or ruthless as the enemy. I think you're right that Thorfinn is aware, he just pushed it aside.
