Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of season 3, episode 1.   I ADORED the beginning of this episode, I can't tell you how much I need to see our crew just hanging out and being cute!  Also, our crew is officially part of Squad Levi now, yay!  The higher ups are really starting to show their hand now, and I think what I've been saying all along (that the Titan ordeal is a government coverup) might be true!  I was REALLY disturbed by the scene where Armin is disguised as Historia LOL!!  But I applaud our crew for always doing so well with their bait and switch tactics.  Especially Jean, who is REALLY done with being Eren's stunt double!  And that part at the end.....KENNY?!?!?  What in the world?!?!?!  Can't wait to see what happens next!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Ayy S3 here we go, my personal favorite season. This will be a wild one! I almost think you should have a notepad with you for future episodes cause I personally missed little bits of info in some scenes and had to rewatch them. So you might want to have something to put keywords or tid bits of info into. Just a recommendation tho, not necessary if you don't want to.

kamenriderhime

Hahahahahah!!!!! I feel like "KENNNYYYYYYY" is the "KHHHAAANNNN" of the anime world now :P

kamenriderhime

YAY! I can't wait to see more! I'm already stunned by what I've already seen! I think a notepad is a great idea, I've been meaning to do that for a while! I just hope I can recognize that something is important enough to write down when it happens....otherwise I know I can rely on you guys to point things out to me which is so nice! Thanks for the suggestion!!!!!! ^_^

And it begins! I can't wait, this season is so good with the characters and themes and human conflict. Also, that OP is great. It's crazy that our trainees are now the new Levi Squad. To make the timeline clear, the old Levi Squad were killed by Annie and then a day or so later S2 happened, and S3 is occurring about a week after S2. So it's recent but as you can see the scouts were relaxed enough that some time had passed. And now the government is after Eren and Historia. Like you said, they want Eren for the Coordinate. In the recent mission all the Titans were ignoring the Scouts and going after Reiner and Bertholdt, so the people pulling the strings as you say would have figured out from that report that someone with the Coordinate must have been controlling them, and they know that Eren is a Titan, so they put together the pieces and now they're attempting to kidnap him. I promised I'll try to restrict how much I do this, but the manga of the first half of S3 had a lot more content with the anime doing a quicker pace, so just for this episode there's some things you should know that are important. So with Eren's Titan training, basically when he turned into a Titan, that was the end of an experiment testing his limits. They had him do all sorts of tasks, such as constructing a crude house made out of logs (lol), getting him to follow instructions like standing on one leg (both of which he was able to do, so he has more control than he used to), and they tried getting him to talk in his Titan form, but he couldn't make intelligible noises because the shape of his Titan's mouth wasn't fit for it (you can tell he has a sort of weird jaw). Here's a page if you wanna see him hilariously doing those tasks: https://i.imgur.com/rOEnbJU.jpg (text is right to left) After the tasks Eren exited the Titan and took a 30 minute break, then turned into a Titan again but ran out of energy soon, collapsed, took a break, then he turned into a Titan for a third time, and that is what the anime started with. So his Titan was very skinny and not fully formed because he had been using up energy with multiple transformations, showing he could only transform a few times. Gotta love Hange, pretending to be ignorant while subtly feeling his knuckles to tell he had done it... No, you do not know Kenny, new character. As we followed Levi from when he was around a teenager and we know from then on he left the underground, Kenny must have known Levi since before then.

The HYPE is here. This season is THE season. New parties (?) are involved, mysteries are STILL building up, things are about to change. I have seen some people dislike the new opening, because it doesn't have the "intensity" of the others, it doesn't feel like AoT to them. I disagree. It is not really explained in the anime I think, but the problem with Eren's titan is just the result of exhaustion (as you said). At this point, he has transformed several times in a row (three I think), and this show a limit to his ability to use this power. I don't really understand why they didn't make that clear here, it was in the manga. Oh well. "This is funny !" OMYGAWD his face !!! "The power" and "the vessel". Hmmm, qu'est-ce donc que ceci :p Did you noticed the slight differences in the visual ? Some faces are a little different. Mikasa is kinda more like in the manga. Levi also has a little difference in his face I think. There is a different feeling with all the visuals, I really like it. Overall it is a really great episode, introducing new things, extending the lore. Great soundtrack (but the bests musics are yet to come), and great everything. In case it wasn't clear, I LOVE this season. Really good reaction, thanks !

You don't know Kenny yet, don't worry, hes much further from Levi's past. This season is the best in my opinion, it gets so good!

Preston Elkins

Tom, is there a place I can message you? I'm trying not to post anything spoileriffic, would like to run it by you first.

LaZa

Yes my favorite season (so far) and it seems like you like it already ;D it's gonna be a wild ride. If you have a thing for political thrillers than it's just gonna be even better. Oh and yes putting down some notes may be a good idea for this season.

Dethrox

Yees Kenny is here.. i love this parts even though they have very little about titans (which is this anime about lol)

Preston Elkins

I have a feeling you’re going to really enjoy this season, the tone changes from a really good action series into a political thriller and answers so many questions. One thing I want to share with you, now that you’ve posted it, is my initial thoughts on the opening when I first watched it way back. Even though I had already been spoiled to quite a bit of the show by the time this episode first aired, I tried not to let it affect my musings of the op; it was merely what I came up with at the time. I won’t share how much of my musings panned out with you, you’ll just have to keep watching! Do you remember when The Walking Dead first aired? For the first couple of seasons, it was all about the zombies, Humans vs. Walkers; and all the promo material featured that. The walkers were everywhere, and the entire show was about the last of humanity surviving the onslaught of the dead. But then season 3 came out, and something interesting happened: The Walkers faded from being the main threat and focus of the show, and instead were relegated into being a mere environment hazard as they then paved the way for the real antagonists of the show… Other humans. When I first saw this opening (which I really love, btw), I believed it was to signal such a similar change in Attack on Titan. The show, up until this point, has been all about Humanity vs. Titans. But there wasn’t even a single Titan in this op. Instead of the usual bombastic, pseudo-nationalist anthems like Guren No Yumiya, Jiyuu No Tsubasa, or Shinzou Wo Sasageyo, showing the soldiers fighting the good fight and “Dedicating their hearts to Humanity…” We instead get this wistful, nostalgic, melancholic ballad as we see the characters looking back at their childhoods, such as the Shinganshina trio seeing their innocent younger selves running carelessly through the streets. They’re all reminiscing about a much simpler, more innocent time that none of them will ever be able to return to. Watching all that for the first time, I had a feeling that something was going to happen this season that would forever alter the course of history for Humanity, as total and absolute as the Colossal and Armored Titans breaking the walls at Shinganshina and Wall Maria back in episodes 1 and 2. There would be no going back after this season, no return to simpler and happier times. This opening, as I interpreted it then, is them saying goodbye to that old world. If no one has recommended them yet, I think it would be a pretty nice deal for yourself to watch the remaining OVA’s between the first half and second half of this season (between episodes 12 and 13). A Sudden Visitor, Distress, and Lost in the Cruel World. None of them are really as important to the story as No Regrets and Wall Sina, Goodbye were; but I personally think you would enjoy them, especially now that you’re this far into the series and as invested. As always, great reaction! I can’t wait to watch more with you!

Thanks for listening to my advice with the spoilers - you realised it quickly! Btw I agree with your comments about the OP, Red Swan (the name of the OP), it's my favourite OP out of all 5 of them, and I love the visuals and the theme of childhood. Also it was one of those fantastic moments where the anime times things to fit to the release of the manga, so the events that were happening in the manga at the time made the song all the more beautiful. Also, it might be because it partly reminds me of my favourite Radiohead song, Creep. lol

kamenriderhime

YAY!!! Yeah I love the new opening....it for sure has a very different feel but I like that they mixed things up a bit, plus it's beautiful! Thanks for clearing that up about Eren's Titan! "The Power" and "The Vessel"......hmm!!! Will have to make note of those! YES I did notice the slight difference in the visuals, Levi DEFINITELY looks different and so do Eren and Mikasa! I'm so excited to see more of this season!!!!! Thank you so much, I hope you love my future reactions!!!!!! ^_^

kamenriderhime

I really do!!! :D Oh wow....I think I'm really in for something special this season! I'm gonna start keeping a notepad with me, just feel free to point out important words/scenes in case they don't stand out enough to me to write down, okay? Thank you so much! :D

kamenriderhime

Haha sometimes the best aspects of shows like this aren't the "monsters" but the human characters they build up as part of the story (well, technically, everyone on this show is human now, but you know what I mean lol). :D

Sirghostfreak

Season 3 has begun like I've said before in my opinion when i was watching it got split into two parts first part mostly had to do with uncovering some important information here and there that's how I saw it so if you get confused you can always go back to the episode or write down key words I don't really do that but I thought I would suggest it if you want them for later reference second half were gonna see the fights unfold and that's not to say part 1 doesn't have great action scenes just it here there and and not spanning into four episodes

Alex R

Yay season 3!! Also, full disclosure...the first time I saw the "not yet" guy my first thought was "Eren's dad?" So you're not alone!

kamenriderhime

Thanks for the suggestion! I have been keeping a notepad nearby, but nothing has jumped out at me yet, it couldn't hurt to keep it nearby just in case though! Interesting about the two halves of the season! I can't wait to see what happens!!!
