Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to ep 5 of season 2 of Oshi no Ko! Wow guys, we got a lot in this one! Most of all it seems we've kinda rekindled the rivalry between Kana and Akane (not that it was ever really gone lol), but dang, they really are two forces of nature when it comes to their skills and their attitudes! Kana can be so catty but Akane can get downright scary too, as we saw in this one! I can't wait to see what Aqua has learned to do in order to give a good emotional performance....but if the attack he was starting to have there at the end was any indication, I'm very concerned about where this is going!! Great ep! Enjoy! ~ MH

Hi Hime :) Aqua humbled Melt so much that he became a good guy lol No, honestly, I hope he'll have progressed enough for the author of the manga "sweet today" to forgive him, because he's a good guy in the end and could even join the same company as Kana and Aqua, they seem to get along well in the end. Ruby showing a bit of her darkness by saying she would never forgive Aqua if he got Akane pregnant... Yeah, when you remember that Ai was 16 too, it's understandable. We talked about Aqua's trauma, but Ruby being a paragon of joy also shows that she's trying to compensate for her own trauma for me. So seeing another side of her makes me happy. Now, Akane and Kana... Well I'm biased since I prefer Kana of course, but I find that in the end, they are two sides of the same coin, each not really understanding the other, while understanding her ^^'. Akane assumes that Kana is like that with everyone, that she is a good actress but that she tries too hard to be a star (while we know that this is not the case, no one judges Kana more harshly than Kana herself). Akane being more reserved and methodical, feels threatened by Kana's more raw talent. On the other hand, Kana feels threatened by Akane's talent because she has continued to progress while Kana has been stuck in roles where she had to underplay. Kana being so aggressive with Akane is also a way of protecting herself. But in the end, if they can't get along and if they don't stop their bickering, it's also because they respect each other as actresses, otherwise, they would let it go. Well, it's also because of Aqua, let's be realistic, but there's more to it than that. Note also, the only person other than Akane that Kana is this "mean" to is Aqua. Which supports my point that if Kana didn't have respect for Akane, she wouldn't be like this with her. But I'm waiting to see more, because they gave a hint that Akane and Kana met when they were younger and Kana being who she was at the time must have hurt Akane deeply.

It’s another Thursday, so that means another big episode in Oshi No Ko. Every time this show turns back on, it feels like something else gets added to the pot, doesn’t it? It’s fiction - but it’s also grounded enough that these characters actually feel like real people and not idealistic caricatures. They have strengths and they have flaws. I noticed Akane was focusing a lot when she was cooking on vegetables - now if you recall she was doing all the meat grilling in S1 because she’s a vegetarian. Anyway, I thought that was a neat touch - I have to admit I am not a veggie fan myself so I really don’t get it - I swing in the opposite direction. But Gotunda’s mom approves, and Akane seems a little bit embarrassed about it but happy. She also confirms that she’s trying really hard because she does owe him - she’s not still here if Aqua doesn’t stop her back in S1. It’s interesting how Aqua has no qualms about Akane watching his acting clips, but when Kana asked last year it was a definitive “no.” It might be because Akane immediately recognizes that all of his previous performances were planned out in advance. Put another way - when you react you do so in real-time, not knowing what’s coming - the equivalent would be watching the episode and scripting what you would do in each scene. It’s a bit exhausting and also, doesn’t sound very practical, does it? I may have picked up that Aqua collapsed as a kid after shooting a scene involving parental death, or something traumatic like that. Either way it adds fuel to the fire that he has trouble expressing himself. Akane wants to know why Aqua is an actor, and understandably he really doesn’t want to give the real reason at first - so he posed it in the form of a hypothetical. The real shocker is Akane’s reaction. I think her answer was both meant to convey support for him and also get him to think about the choice - also we DO know that Akane would like to be his actual girlfriend but she’s playing this “work role” with the hope of proving her worth. It’s a very twisted take on the whole “I’m with you, for better or for worse, as your partner” argument. But she is serious about supporting him it seems. She wants something in return though, and that’s to outshine Kana and Himekawa - not an easy task. She’s worried she may just die if she fails and tells Aqua it’s his duty to not let that happen. While not letting your girlfriend die is part of a boyfriend’s job - there is definitely some callback vibes in this dialogue, I mean… we all remember how close she got to just calling it quits. Not sure that was the best phrasing to use. Gotunda is really the only person Aqua can really turn to for help and he pretty much recaps his shpiel from S1 about “acting just as envisioned.” Unfortunately in this case, doing that requires Aqua to overcome his weakest element. So only one thing to do, practice. Melt is trying to overcome his “performance” on Sweet Today and become a better actor. He gets interrupted by Ruby and Minami, who Ruby is apparently using as a way to get into rehearsals, but Aqua has already left for the day. This causes a lot of speculation in everyone’s part and Melt drops the info that he leaves with Akane, but Ruby is confused because he doesn’t show up at home until late. Minami I’d imagination runs a little bit wild… and Ruby gets rather um… defensive? Week know they’re not out “frolicking,” but Ruby reiterates she’d lose a ton of respect for him if he did something like that to a high school girl. I mean, hormones do play a role in this especially at this age, but if anyone’s making any moves to that point it’s Akane - and she’s got her own problems, so Ruby can probably not worry too much. Meanwhile, one of their co workers (looks like his name is Sakuya) tries to hit on Minami and get her LINE (ie, contact info) by pressuring her while Ruby hits the restroom. Melt intervenes, only to be given a shady and derogatory dressing down because of his past resume. Melt knows he’s facing an uphill climb - it’s a little rude to rub it in his face when he’s trying so hard. And it turns out the other guy hit on Ruby anyway, but fortunately her idol mates got ahold of her before it went too far. You have to really be careful who you let into your circle as an entertainer. Meanwhile back on stage Akane’s glare has caught the attention of Kana. After a few barbs, Kana fires a huge bullet in pulling out a back issue with Akane’s first interview saying she was inspired by her. Then she apologizes that she doesn’t like her at all, and asks if security can remove the fan from the casting area. Kana certainly is not above going through some pettiness to win an argument but, sheesh, wasn’t that a bit much? I gotta love the way their barbs at each other start acting like actual bullets and they get shot whenever one hits the mark. But it’s getting a little too heated so the guys have to pull them apart. Honestly, I could watch this longer, it’s vastly entertaining. I kinda get how Gyokuyou is feeling in Apothecary Diaries right now. XD Akane’s that causes Aqua to remember that Kana was so boisterous and rude as a kid that he couldn’t stand her, either, so he has to concede on that point. Granted, Kana isn’t THAT person anymore, but she definitely still has… traces of it in her personality. Kana is pleased with herself but also reluctantly admits she’s been comparing herself to her for quite a while - as their styles differ but they both are seeking a lot of the same things but are going about it in different ways. She’s also very insistent that Aqua and Akane only have a work romance. Wonder what’s motivating that? :P The fated rival comparison Melt gives us a little too on the nose for her liking. Melt asks Himekawa who he thinks is better, and he first says that’s an unfair question because their approaches are so different. But he says Kana will win because she’s got him (the star of the play) to play off of. Then Sakuya shows up and berates Melt again about being miscast, which causes him to ask Kana for rehearsing help, something she was about to ask him for anyway. Neither Kana or Akane are backing down, which might be a good thing as far as their acting is concerned. Abiko is having a huge case of the “what ifs” on opening day, and GOA and Yoriko try to assure her everything will work out - until Abiko reminds her that didn’t go so well for Yoriko’s manga. And she meddled so much, her fingerprints are over all of it. “What if I’m the only one who finds what I created entertaining?” I imagine it’s similar to when you start uploading a new show, you probably do always think “I hope people like this content.” All creators probably are familiar with that right before it goes up. Seems like a lot of the dating show people have been invited to the Premeire of the play as well, which causes a lot of catching up - and Ruby gets a little smug about being a celebrity for a moment. They’re a little surprised Gotunda shows up, but he’s here to see the result of the training, it looks like. Akane and Kana are both ready to match talent against each other, readily admitting they’re not two people willing to mix, but they also know facing the other is going to bring out their best stuff. As for Aqua… it was almost like his “sequence” trying to channel Ai was happening inside of a mirror, and then it flipped back to normal. He doesn’t look like he’s in the greatest shape here, but apparently this is the method he’s going for. I’m not gonna lie, I kinda want to see how this play actually plays out - it looks like it would be fun. I get the feeling we’re not done with the whole Akane Vs Kana stuff either. I think maybe someone needs to make some popcorn for this! You do have enough for the entire Patreon right? 👀

I love it when musical theater gets catty

Hi Spadeas! :) LOL!!!! He seriously did :P I hope so too, I can see he's trying hard! OHHH you're so right too that their mom did get pregnant very young, so there's some irony there :P I know, it's always fun to see these sides of Ruby!! I think that's a great way to sum up both the similarities and differences between Akane and Kana. But yeah, this whole thing is because they ultimately hold each other in such high regard. That's actually so true that Kana only acts that way with people she feels a certain way about! I think you're right that what happened between them when they were younger had a big effect.

That was a great callback with the veggies, I didn't even catch that! That's true that Aqua was okay with Akane watching his old performances vs. Kana. Oof, that's true about Aqua collapsing as a kid during a parental scene, and also the phrasing of what Akane said about dying. I actually really liked Melt in this one! The verbal battle was so intense haha. Kana and Akane are so good in their own ways and for sure neither one is backing down. Abiko's nerves are so relatable! The mirror sequence was rough to watch! We certainly have a lot of coals on the fire now so to speak, I def think we're gonna need some popcorn for next time!!!
