I love these two episodes so damn much. I think it’s awesome to get an episode focused on what Somewhat is up to after volume 9 and I love how it’s in a very storybook format. Also even though the animation for the RWBY Beyond episodes was for budget reasons I think this style of animation really fits the storybook feel. After how much of a connection Somewhat & Ruby formed during volume 9 it makes a lot of sense to make Lindsay the narrator & it makes me wonder if she read/reads stories to her daughter like this. It sounds like the Blacksmith has given Somewhat the Curious Cat’s original purpose which is to help people return to the Tree when Beings in the Ever After have lost their purpose. Although now instead of the purpose resting on the shoulders of one character it’s going to be Somewhat’s heart working together with the Herbalist’s medicines. It was great to visit many of the locations from volume 9 again and seeing the characters rebuilding/thriving after the events of V9. It feels like after interacting with/seeing RWBY & Jaune the characters in the Ever After have become a little more human when it comes to how they think about change or at the very least more self-reliant. I love that Somewhat was able to help the Red Prince just by talking with him & changing his perspective in some ways especially with the emphasis of how important talking about your problems is in volume 9. I think the person Somewhat meets at the end of episode three was Ruby either for some reason during volume 10 or in my mind what is more likely after volume 10 especially because time in the EA is nebulous. Also I heard this from someone I watch but wouldn’t it be crazy if this entire episode was a story Ruby was telling to kids her kid or otherwise long after the end of the story? It also makes you wonder if because a character or characters are returning to the EA if Neo actually will return to the story or the world of Remnant after the story is over. I love episode 4 so, so much because I love sibling stuff & it feels like a counterpoint to an argument I have always taken issue with that Yang is a bad sister. Although I understand being critical of her unfortunately not seeing that Ruby needed help it’s just that most arguments I have seen about Yang being a bad sister don’t feel well-founded. And I think the joke Ruby makes when she becomes chibi is a bit of commentary from the writers that that is not true. Also we have to keep in mind that in the original version of volume 9 before the budget cuts was supposed to have more scenes of Yang reacting to & talking about Ruby choosing what she assumed was death in the immediate aftermath. I will always think volume 9 is great but it is unfortunate that some of the deep & important conversations were missing because of the budget cuts. Also there probably would have been additional introspection from all the characters including Ruby during her time with the Blacksmith about the circumstances that dad and led to Ruby’s decision. I’m just really happy that at least they have time to hang out as sisters at least in between whatever work needs to be done after so long of not having much time to do that with so much crazy stuff happening constantly. It’s really interesting to see Ruby as this celebrity of sorts after what she did to bring the world together when a lot of people were impressed or thought she was cool before she became this symbol of unity. Something I think is cool is how Ruby was always able to unify/bring people together even if only indirectly by inspiring people like with Oscar. It’s nice to be reminded that Yang always thought her sister was cool & I love the reference back to volume 1 mentioning normal knees. I love immediately after Ruby makes an offhand comment about the pressure of this celebrity status without really saying it that Yang checks in on her about this maybe being too much. I think it’s really heartwarming that in addition to the people a piece of Vale survived in this Boba shop & it’s nice that this gave us a story about their childhood. My guess for what’s going on with their father is a secret mission possibly involving Glynda & the relic at Beacon. But Yang’s line about needing to be there for some things hits hard when you remember how their father shut down after Summer died & Yang had to take care of Ruby by herself and their father wasn’t there for a lot of stuff. I love the way Yang handles talking about what happened by not being harsh at all but being really understanding of what led to what happened in a way that put Ruby at ease. I like talking about how you might not really be able to completely understand someone suffering with mental health issues because it’s true. And it is a very important thing just to let those you care about that they are loved & appreciated because it can make all the difference in the world when someone is going through rough times which unfortunately went to the wayside when it came to Ruby because of the stress the others were going through as well as the world ending threat. I think it’s great that Yang accepts her own responsibility in making Ruby feel alone & unable to ask for help while Ruby has to face her own issues of not knowing how to ask for help. I love that they have this code word while she still doesn’t know how to ask until hopefully Ruby is able to ask for help & it’s so sweet that it’s based on something they share from childhood. It feels so good to hear this sentiment of never feeling alone now knowing how much of that feeling Ruby has been facing especially in V9. And the hug makes me all warm inside especially at this point in the snow. Also I think the line at the end as their voices fade about going cloths shopping is a little bit of a meta thing about how they are going to have new outfits next volume. I completely understand why you felt like these episodes were healing your heart & I totally agree that it enhanced volume 9 for me. And I can’t forget to emphasize how good the voice acting was in this short the emotion they can portray just through their voices is so impressive. Something funny/cool is that one of the writers Eddy Rivas was one of the townspeople talking to Ruby. Finally I think when it comes to people either understanding or not understanding the way the characters were acting towards Ruby I actually think the writers meant for more people to be in the middle on that subject. Awesome reactions & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
