You might have heard me mention that my computer broke (again). The SSD that windows was on started failing, so I spent Wednesday and most of Thursday trying to resolve the problem, the biggest being how to lose as little as possible. I had been planning to do a reinstall of Windows during the New Year break because of long term problems that I've been having, so the only two unfortunates of it are the timing and that I wasn't able to prepare ahead of time and streamline the process.

The timing is bad because everything is still being put back to rights, I don't even have the compression program running yet. Hence the fact that the latest Khan chapter is attached to this message in mp3 (Lone Wolf was compressed previously). The timing is also bad because it means no new videos until Monday at the earliest. I've got lots of things that are close to ready for production and they're all stuck, which pisses me off because I thought for the first time in a while I'd have all the rewards done before the last day of the month. Instead I spent Wednesday and most of Thanksgiving playing around in DOS.

I'm waiting for a new SSD to arrive, which should be here on Monday, so I'm spending the time finalizing scripts and restoring the system so that once it's in I can hit the ground running. My hope is to have the Star Trek IV video ready for officers and up that night, but it'll depend on how late the package arrives and how long it takes to copy everything off the backup drive (not to worry, I've got a secondary and tertiary backup of the most essential elements, just in case it fails). Hopefully things go smoothly.

And of course, a belated note that this holiday I am, as always, thankful for your support! I'll try to get this latest crisis resolved with minimal disruption.

I can't help this, but I'm a HUGE computer nerd. ;) I have a neat inexpensive device that lets me clone drives with the push of a button. It's a Wavlink ST334UC USB 3.1 Dual Bay HDD/SSD Docking Station. Got it on Newegg when it went on sale for 30 bucks. Anyway, I had a system drive that was starting to give me trouble and all I had to do was get a new drive, slap it and my old drive into the bays, hit a button, and then install the new drive with the freshly cloned data back into my PC. Start to finish was about a half hour. :) The only tricky thing you might run into is if you clone to a larger drive. You'll need to fix the partition on the larger drive with a program like Partition Magic, otherwise your PC will only see the old drive's size. It's just a couple of clicks, a reboot, and you're all set. The cloning of a half a terabyte from an old SSD to a new one took about 10 minutes. You don't even need to have it plugged into your PC if all you're doing is cloning one drive to another. The drives just slide into their slots and, oh yeah, it was TWO button presses. Kind of a security/"are you sure" thing. ;) Anyway, it's a good thing to have around for cloning drives. You might not use it a whole awful lot, but when you DO use it, you will be happy you have it. It's normally just 35 bucks. :)

I use m.2 NVME SSD, so that's probably not an option for me. :-) But I'm taking steps; it's only because of the move that things weren't set up to minimize this kind of upset already.

Well, I feel so "old tech" now! Just pack me up and send me to the Island of Misfit Tech Toys! ;) Speaking of which, I JUST now ordered a new PC from Digital Storm. I just don't have the patience to put PCs together anymore. :( Good luck getting everything back in working order! :)
