Zac took another look around before he released [Profane Seal] as he gazed down at the corpse of the Lich King. This wretched half-man half-corpse had caused so much trouble for Earth, but he hadn’t even been able to resist one attack of his new Spirit Tool. He couldn’t help but shake his head as he bent down to look for treasure.

He pried a low-quality Spatial Ring from the man's hand and found a top-quality Cosmos Sack hidden within his robes before he threw the body into his Spatial Ring. He walked over to the ghost next, which had turned into a pile of shimmering sand upon dying.

It felt a bit weird digging around in a pile of ghost ashes, but Zac found a spatial pouch and a set of throwing darts inside. He popped a healing pill next as he explored the chamber, and he could quickly confirm there were only two points of interest apart from the numerous inscribed pillars. The first was a pedestal holding a large black rock, and the second was a proper entrance in the direction of the palace.

It didn't require a genius in formations to figure out the pedestal, or rather the rock, was the core of the array, but Zac left it alone so that Kenzie could look at it instead. As for the entrance, it was sealed shut, and Zac had more pressing things to do than to look for treasure in the palace. A massive amount of energy coursed through his body after his two kills.

The Lich might have been the highest leveled individual on Earth apart from the Dominators, and the amount of energy he had gained from the kill was staggering. This energy alone was more than all the kills above-ground, and it would probably take him weeks to grind the equivalent with any targets he could find on Earth.

He really needed to make sure everything was okay on the surface though, and he ran back to the hole in the ceiling, speeding against the clock as the accumulated energy already had started to dissipate from his body. But he froze just as he was about to jump up before he looked down at his chest.

The wound to his lung had mostly healed by now thanks to the pill, and he activated his duplicity core again. With [Profane Seal] expended his undead form was severely weakened, not to mention there might still be curious eyes upstairs. He felt a stabbing pain in his chest when the transformation completed, but it wasn’t too bad.

Zac jumped up through the entrance he came from, and soon enough found himself back in the open air. It wasn’t too different from how he left it, but he saw a clear change as he jumped up on one of the tallest buildings that were still standing after the battle. Streams of the surviving undead were rushing toward the Incursion Pillar, and the fortress was fast losing its population.

This was just how it usually went. The invaders all got a warning the leader was dead, and the countdown before the Nexus Hub closed had begun. A glance over in his sister’s direction showed they had moved away even further from the fortress, and the unthinking zombies seemed to have lost interest in them by now.

Perhaps they were unsure what to do after having lost connection to the Lich King.

“Good job,” a bloodied Ogras said as he emerged from the shadows. “That girl suddenly lost her composure, I’m guessing she got the prompt of her leader’s untimely demise.”

“I dealt with the other General as well. There should be no more threats, but are you okay to guard the others for a bit?” Zac asked. “I think I found the array, but let these people clear out a bit before I bring Kenzie over. I want to use the energy to break open a node before it’s too late.”

“These guys don’t seem to have any fight left in them,” the demon nodded as he looked around. “Go ahead, I’ll look after things.”

Zac nodded and entered the building he stood on, finding a secluded spot. There was no point in him going after the fleeing Revenants and Corpse Lords, as that would only result in a net loss of accumulated energy with the speed he was losing energy from killing the Lich King.

He only hesitated for a second before he sat down on his prayer mat. The fighting above had only left him with some grazes, and the stab wasn't too bad either. Most of the danger had come from the torrent of miasma, which had been completely neutralized and absorbed moment he turned into a Draugr. Apart from having spent most of his big skills he was essentially in good condition.

He couldn't discard this opportunity to become stronger, and he directly started pushing the remaining energy toward the node in his left leg. The Undead Empire was dealt with, but he still needed every advantage he could get in the upcoming fight against the Dominators. He needed to break open a few more nodes, and he turned his vision inward.

The node in his leg was just like before; partially opened and chock-full of energy while still impeding energy circulation. Seeing that nothing had changed from swapping classes back and forth he started to forcibly infuse it, and the pain quickly grew to uncomfortable levels.

The minutes passed and Zac started to brace himself for what was coming, but even he hadn't expected the extreme agony when the node finally exploded. His white robes got drenched in blood as his a chunk of his leg exploded as well to the point that bone was exposed. But that pain was still nothing compared to the agony he felt on a spiritual level.

The nodes were something between corporeal and intangible, fixed on what Ogras called a Spirit Body. It was essentially an energy copy that perfectly matched your physical form, and it was the housing of the pathways. And now this Spirit Body was wounded from the explosion, causing the pathways in his legs to become messed up.

He finally understood the difference between opening a node the normal way and forcing it open. The normal way was akin to unclogging a drain by pouring down some solvent before snaking it dislodge whatever caused the bad flow. Forcing a node open was rather like throwing a stick of dynamite down the drain and blowing up the clog, along with half your house.

This self-inflicted carnage did not only hurt a lot, but Zac also realized it had weakened him drastically. His Energy circulation was all out of control, even in the parts of his body that weren't harmed. He immediately took out another pill, this one intended to heal souls.

It helped with the pain somewhat, but there was no time for him to properly heal as an immense pressure suddenly descended upon him. Zac barely had time to get on his feet before a blinding golden light bled through the cracks in the wall, and then he was falling as the building collapsed.

A blistering heat was pushing down from above as well, almost immediately making the stones to burn upon the slightest touch. A new set of shallow wounds covered his body as he was buried in an avalanche of stones, but he immediately started to dig himself out. But there were just golden flames and smoke all around him, robbing him of his visibility. He didn’t even know if he was digging in the right direction.

Worry gripped his heart as Zac pushed the heated stones out of the way. What the hell was going on?

The strength required to unleash an attack with that kind of impact was not something anyone in his group could deal with, and it didn't look like something that the undead would use. There was only one group who could conjure something like this.

The cultists.

He quickly circulated energy as he tried to forcibly push himself out of the mountain of rubble. But a blaring pain erupted in his left leg after putting too much pressure on it, almost making him black out from the agony. The events had made him forgot about the wound from blasting open the node, but at least he had managed to break free from the building.

Only to be met with an utter inferno.

Golden flames had embroiled the fortress in every direction, and scorched corpses of elite Undead Warriors littered the wall. Zac had already killed most of them through his earlier rampage, and there couldn't be many still around after this salvo. The cultists must have bombarded the fortress with massive siege weapons to cause this kind of destruction in an instant.

Panic really started to set in but opening the Ladder screen allowed Zac to breathe out in relief. He could spot both his sister and Emily on the Dao Ladder, and Joanna on the Level ladder. Whatever was going on right now hadn't affected them just yet.

That didn't mean he could relax, but he simply couldn't find any target. There were just flames and corpses everywhere, and a sky on fire. He hobbled toward one of the broken towers, each step feeling like he was getting stabbed. A few jumps later he found himself on the broken peak, looking across the landscape.

Nothing.

There was no zealot army amassing outside the gates, just a grey haze in every direction except for the Incursion pillar. The bombardment was thankfully confined to the fortress, and he believed that Ogras was experienced enough to avoid getting scorched. Zac felt a fluctuation from his spatial ring, and he took out a communication crystal with surprise.

These things hadn't worked since they had reached the core of the Dead Zone, but now he heard his Sister on the other side of the line.

"What's going on?" Zac asked. "Is everyone okay?"

"It’s the cultists! A huge flying vessel suddenly appeared in the sky, and we immediately fled into the woods to not implicate you,” Kenzie said from the other side. “Ogras shrouded us, so we’re fine.”

“Stay hidden,” Zac said. “I can deal with this alone.”

“Be careful. I don’t think they just came for the undead. They are probably here to deal with you as well,” she said.

"It seems that way," Zac sighed as a storm of flames was falling straight toward him.

Cosmic Energy surged in his body, but a blazing pain made itself reminded as the recently opened node flared up. He could only grit his teeth as he forced the Cosmic Energy to move. However, he barely managed to form a 30-meter fractal edge with [Chop] this time, compared to the 100-meter blade he easily conjured earlier.

It wasn't enough. The blade cut into the wall of flames like a knife, but it was swallowed whole without breaking apart the attack. Zac didn't hesitate to activate a defensive treasure, and a sphere enclosed him and the top of the tower in an instant. The flames slammed down like a furious waterfall the next second, and Zac felt the scorching heat even within his protective bubble.

The base of the tower was quickly incinerated, and the tip was just held in the air with the help of the barrier. But the flames finally subsided, which allowed the skies to clear out. Only then did he finally spot the source of the attacks. A large vessel in gold and red hovered a few hundred meters above the fortress, something that looked like a mix of a flying treasure and a floating island.

Zac couldn't see how it looked from the top, but it seemed to be kept in the air with a massive ball of flames. Zac sighed with a shake of his head as he took out his own flying treasure. The cultists really liked their fire. He quickly rose into the sky as the tower fell to the ground behind him, no longer supported by the shield.

Nausea and double-vision plagued him from the pain of opening a node, so he needed to end this fast. He forced the unruly Cosmic Energy into his arm as he prepared his last skill of mass destruction. He had used up [Deforestation] in his earlier fight, but there was still one more card he could bring out; [Nature's Punishment].

His whole body was covered in sweat from the pain of forcibly utilizing his maimed pathways, but he couldn’t stop at this juncture. Space cracked and the familiar hand flew out, though Zac couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed that the hand hadn't changed at all from him evolving.

It still radiated terrifying might due to the Fragment of the Bodhi though, and it shot straight through a burst of flames without even getting its leaves singed.

The hand placed itself straight above the floating warship, and Zac didn't delay a second before the familiar branch started to descend. There was no way to tell what these unhinged lunatics had planned, and he needed to strike before it was too late.

The branch quickly grew in size at it shot down at the ship, but a burning whip covered in white-hot flames shot up to meet its descent. Zac spotted a lizardman standing at the fore of the vessel, his eyes lit up like two blazing beacons as five swirls of pure-white globes of fire circulated behind him.

Zac had fought one of the other generals just the other day, but the power this man emitted far eclipsed him. In fact, this man even felt more threatening than the Lich King himself, though much of the danger from the Undead Leader came from his command of formations.

Had the leader of the Church of the Everlasting Dao come in person?

Gerald Monroe

Why doesn't he disengage? The Dao church is here with all their buffs, ready to take on Zach. Why not pull back and rest for long enough to be combat effective? Also get a full team and maybe some warships to engage the invaders. It doesn't make sense to fight now, not when the Cultists are not running an array to doom the planet. He should pull back, find out when the next shackle reduction will happen (when the cultists are allowed to become more powerful), and attack a little bit before that.

jerome

Thanks for the revision

Finn Ryan

feels odd that while correcting his mistakes you didnt also make him use the mountain or water punishment

Kevin Caffrey

I dunno about IQ +30, maybe +3. I think the biggest issue before was wood vs fire and he is still acting like a caveman. Wasn’t part of the purpose of going to the tower to collect a ton of fighting experience against strong enemies so he doesn’t have to act like a dumb brute all the time?

Anonymous

Zac doesn't know where the Church HQ is. Their leader being here in the flesh against him means he can finish them off right here and now.

Gerald Monroe

What mistake even got corrected? He's Leeroy Jenkinsing the boss.

IAVL

He is still in pain from opening the Node. That was never going to change, because Zac nevr thought that the Cultist were going to attack the moment he was done with the Undead. Rememeber that his attack was a stealth mission, meaning that Zac and his forces should have have a few hours to recollected themselves. I got this from the other chapter, but it is good that TFD made it more clearer

Stylemys

His reasoning for cracking open the node was explained. He checked in above, all seemed well, and he need was on a time limit it use the gains from the Lich to open the node before he lost them.

DefianceNovels

You put it into the context of the last 20+ incursions he's closed. The normal course of event is: Defeat the boss -> keep watch over Nexus Hub while he heals up -> Buy teleporter and leave after countdown is over. There have never been any post-incursion threats (because the invaders themselves keep their territory safe from outsiders) until now. Now he's suddenly finding himself ambushed with a maimed leg and pathways that messes with his head. He can't think clearly, so he goes by his combat experience and unleashes the strongest attack that he can, the Dao-empowered branch.

Pike

You need to go back to the previous chapter where he explains and discusses his logic why doing this is a bad idea. That's what is throwing me.

Anonymous

Not much of an improvement. It still seems foolish for him to try exploding a Node at this time. It is not like he does not know that it will cause severe damage. He has heard about how dangerous it is from Beruv, and he also read about the non-Cultivator who spent most of his time in bed recovering from exploding his Nodes. It is not like Zac is going to be a lot stronger going from level 80 to 81. The gain is no where near worth the risk. Besides, he still has a four gates pill he has not used. And he has all the ingredients to make more four gates pills (or trade ingredients for already made pills).

Anonymous

Luckily wood is super effective against fire!

Anonymous

Looks like a power creep issue. It feels like Zac got too powerful and now he needs to be forcibly nerfed for a while so the fights aren't too easy (or at least don't look like it). That, or the author wants someone else to get some camera time. Maybe it's time for Kenzie to shine? Thing is, no one will get mad if Zac crushes his enemies right after evolving. Or at least, we care less than to have such artificial weakening of the MC thrown at our face. And if he gets some special upgrade as a side-effect of his stupidity, things will only get worse, as if it doesn't matter what he does or not, things just magically work out. As for the other possibility, after it taking so damn long for Zac to evolve his classes, having someone else shine would suck a lot. Like, "You went through all that to grow stronger? Doesn't matter, I could've fixed things all along. LMAO" It's about the investment and the payoff for the readers, really. I mean, we had what, 3 or 4 chapters of him getting an upgrade? And now he just does that? Why the hell did we even have to read about his upgrade if it wouldn't matter? Not to mention the whole Tower Arc. It also helps that this is a web serial, so we can't just get pissed and move on to see how he'll solve the issue, we gotta live with frustration for a whole day or more.

Talen Drake

Neither version really speaks to me. In the first version he broke through in Draugr form, and the damage effects made some sense. This chapter it no longer does. Before, he was smart enough to realize draugr vs. cultist wasn't a good move, but not that fire vs wood wasn't? I prefer less idiotic main characters tbh. The real problem here is that cosmic energy is gained in the second tier in the midst of combat but now all of a sudden it has to be used in the middle of combat? Take Zach out of the equation and it still doesn't make sense. This is a world building flaw that needs to be corrected before it snowballs.

Oh, I forgot to add: editing your story seldom makes your readers happier. I found that the hard way. It just makes people more vocal about the things they didn't like (I didn't comment on the previous version, for instance). Sometimes, readers are like sharks smelling blood in the water.

Frardowin

Author already mentioned that the screwed up pathways messed with . " Now he's suddenly finding himself ambushed with a maimed leg and pathways that messes with his head. He can't think clearly, so he goes by his combat experience and unleashes the strongest attack that he can, the Dao-empowered branch." From a TFD comment above.

Stylemys

How bad was the predictable risk though? They had no clue the Church had a flying island. Under any other circumstance they would have been able to see the Church coming through the zombie hordes outside first. Is it unreasonable to think Zac might have a least an hour or two to recover using the Bodhi first?

kyle

This is my take. If he finishes off the church as well it's all forgiven. If not this is getting to be a bit much.....it's been nothing but fast paced action for a long long time now. One deadline after another and the suspense is adding up. I was hopping for a real good power up that would just allow us some breathing room but instead we got to see a bunch of future power ups that won't come into effect until....later? Idk I think we just need a break from all the suspense, so if we could get thru and wrap these up quick and then have some time to decompress it would be great....if that's what your already trying to do by stacking these attacks then you know us well and thanks :).

Anonymous

as long as this isn’t just an excuse to have him not kill the cultist leader, it’s fine. i think we would be happy with one stupid mistake after battle, but not opening a node AND the wrong natures punishment. also some more kenzie hate, zac: “stay hidden, i’ll fight” kenzie: “be careful. they probably came for you as well” well no shit kenzie, be careful? great advice. not just here for the undead? well no shit.

Andrew

Thank you!

D

Whats up with the rage? Didnt read comments, just the chapter. I mean, wasnt it just zac being a meathead? I mean sure, it was a bit strange that this muscle brained siscon didnt first look for her before he tryed to get stronger, but meh, we read worse decisions from him. x)) Chapter was nice, made him indeed look like he got a iq buff. He sometimes reminds me of 61 from alien. You know, the guy who got his iq branded on his forehead. K, jokes aside, why the rumble for the church making their move? They know he was back, it was clear he would try to stop the undead (their declared arch enemy), so they stood around to pick up who ever came out as the winner. You know, same old 'when two quarrel the third rejoices'. So what if its a constand peak run, whats there to relax? Its not like the story has that much of side shows. There is hardly kingdom building, no intricate politics (someone is against you, kill them, chapter closed), no deep romance (well, maybe bringing alea back counts as something like that? if yes, its not realy good, there where hardly any feelings before, so it feels more like a guilt trip), item crafting? just feed the super array: +1 new item, get him a trainings montage? for what? he isnt a cultivator, his training is killing, killing some more, kill a bit different and find some nice upgrades in the wild. So yeah, story is linear, jump from one crisis to a nother, have one big fight after a nother, delayed by some small fights and walking around, getting some upgrades to get the next badi down under. We all knew what we where in for when we subscribed to this story, didnt we? So relax and enjoy the ride... eh fight. x))

Juli Freixi

Oh! Now I arrive... I will read aldso the previous version... hehehehe Btw, thanks a lot for the chapter!!

Kiwilord

I am happy either way. It is a classic thing for people to get cocky when victor is assured. Him saying fuck it and doing the node Isn't that crazy. Maybe not wise but whatever, he can aquire that with age

Juli Freixi

I really like this new version much more The First Defier!!! Thanks a lot!!

Stylemys

It's pretty much the same as fighting fire with more fire.

Dave Richards

I like the fact that he at least checked things over and asked Ogras to watch the others before breaking the node.

Adrian Gorgey

Well, a lot of people seem unhappy. Please don't take it too much to heart - this version is better, for sure, and I look forward to where you're going with this

Maniac000

Now would seem like a good time to reach into the cage containing the Shard and Spark to wreck some lizard men.

Chris

The smart thing for Zac to do is haul ass. The cultists would probably destroy the undead formation or at least Zac could come back to fight on his terms. The all-powerful ship seems like an asspull as well. That could have crushed port Atwood instead they teamed up with their undead enemy.

PrimordialJay

Great change! I wonder if they're attacking the undead because Zac attacked them in his Draugr form.

SoggyBiscuit

I'm okay with him making mistakes, as long as those mistakes feel natural, which isn't the case in this chapter. To me, the fact that he didn't even think about Water>Fire is absolutely absurd. Sure, it was a heat-of-the-moment decision, but he has mental stats hundreds of times higher than the average human, you'd think he would have the presence of mind to use some basic logic. Not to mention the fact that he should've already thought of his best counters against the cultists, seeing as he was fucked up after he tried to use his Draugr form last time. [Nature's Punishment] is SUCH a versatile skill, how did he not try to devise strategies against his known enemies BEFORE engaging them, surely he knew he would have to fight them at some point.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Russell Todd

You would like Delve’s main character. He obsessively maths things out and strategizes. As people that like reading web novels we probably lean more to the intellectual side, so it’s not a surprise to me that we struggle to identify with Zac’s decision making. And I would be hesitant to interpret mental stats as making him smarter. If that was the case, every character would have a massive personality shift as their mental stats went from the normal range to triple or more. I think mental stats are more quantitative than qualitative. I’m reminded of the shencomix bit where he’s doing thousands of calculations a second and they’re all wrong lol

Thomas Downing

People are underestimating how much pain Zac is in. He literally just had part of his leg blown off along with the complementary leg part of his spirit, or something like that. And then immediately afterwards gets attacked by an Incursion leader. Yes, it's stupid to use wood vs fire. But this man isn't thinking straight. This is the real-world equivalent of running over a land mine, which gets part of your leg blown off and your brain concussed (I mean usually you would be dead here so say its the real-world equivalent if say you are a super-human), then having your enemy start dropping napalm on you. At this point in time are you really going to tell me, or more importantly the author, that you're thinking straight? Are you going to be forming strategies and plans on how to take out your enemy in the most effecient way possible? Or are you going to reflexively use your best and most reliable weapon to try and take this guy asap who is attacking you while you and your family and subordinates are weakened?

Chopper

It amazes me how you can both defend the story and condemn it in the same rant.

kyle

To me that's not an issue the author can tell as he will....I'm just pointing out that we ha e been in a state of suspense for so long that we could use a week or so of going thru treasure and such as a way to decompress.. In the end I trust him tho, so take all that with a grain of salt.

Khanalas

I don't get why people are so up in arms with he while "wHy nO WatEr PuNishMeNt tho". Why do hey think that water he can't infuse with Dao as good as his branch won't just evaporate? It's such a meme, I bet if cultists used water people would've wanted Zac to use a Fire Punishment because they don't actually know whether Water or Fire is stronger, just that they're contradictory. Zac didn't fling an actual tree into an actual fire, it's a magical regenerating skill tree infused with a Dao with insight into getting Life from Death, you can't confidently say that it'll be worse than another Punishment which isn't as compatible with his Dao

Anonymous

i hadn’t even though of that, but it’s definitely why

Kevin Caffrey

At the end of the first version of this chapter, Zac laments how foolish he was to use wood punishment against fire, and how water would have been much better. That part got cut in this version, presumably to appear in the next chapter. Perhaps the next chapter doesn't have the "oops my hand is on fire i'm dumb" moment though, and the author decides that magical wood is fine when it tries to grab a giant ball of flame? If so, it won't be as bad.

Thenais

mistakes feel less plot driven, which is a good thing. so this version is better imho.

Anonymous

I too have the bad habit of putting the TL;DR at the end of the thing it's supposed to help you skip instead of the beginning. ;)

Himeji

TL;DR: Old version bad. New version good. You only need to read this version. This is the funniest thing I read today and I don't know why

Robert Rosenthal

Zac bad judgement is entirely in character. Ogras is suposed to be the smarter one, hi decision not to upgrade will hopefully be explained soon. He knows zac is a simpleton who lets him steal and such, but plan well. But he also knows how strong the invaders might be. And both of them know the dominators have at least 3 e grade individuals well beyond level 80 so leaving zac alone at that strength is bizarre. Unless they both beleive the dominators are on their side,. otherwise and if zac falls so falls ogras and his people

Anonymous

Look, if you power somebody up, then have them choose to not use it, then have them lose their power irrationally, then there's no point in powering them up. It's just an unsatisfying story arc. It's irrational because Zac has insane healing and endurance. He should be healed from most wounds quickly. Otherwise you just aren't using the stats. It's just BS in a chart.

Anonymous

Not if it takes normal people weeks to heal. It taking what will likely be a day for Zac is then consistent. Also, the wound was on his pathways. Those may not be affected as directly by the amplified healing factor he has due to his stats
