August updates (Patreon)

The support that I've received over this past month has been amazing. Many of you have also provided helpful feedback that I believe have improved the quality of Defiance.

Since we it looks like we will maintain the goal set (famous last words, I know) there will be some changes to the Patreon.

  • 1. The early chapters will increase with 0/1/2/3 chapters depending on the tier. The chapters are already written and will be added within 24 hours or so after I've made sure that the goal is still met after the Aug billing period.
  • 2. The Side-Story "Employee 34", that some of you have read the alpha-stage teaser for, will get a recurring release for patrons only. It is rewritten and improved, and the rewritten chapters will be added today or tomorrow for Heaven's Chosen. It will be available to 5$ Tier and higher and have an unofficial release schedule of roughly 1 chapter/week. Heaven's chosen will have 3 early chapters compared to Progenitors. 
  • 3. I am aiming to add a 15$ Tier called Nexus Whales :) It will tentatively have 30 early chapters and all chapters of Employee 34 that I've written above the unofficial release schedule. I won't enable this tier until the early chapters are ready though, which will likely take another week or two unless the God of Writing descends upon me.
  • 4. I am currently looking into commissions of both a proper cover, and some illustrations of the beasts of the multi-verse. The latter will be patron-exclusive.

Employee 34 is a Slice-of-Life shop-management/"dungeon-ish" LitRPG set in the universe of Defiance of the Fall. Follow Ekz, or Employee 34, as he manage the Boundless Dao Training Center, a System-run experimental facility that's testing the possibility of a "soft-integration approach" for integrating new universes, instead of the System's usual heavy-handed method that Zac currently is experiencing.

It has no connections to the main story, more than the shared multi-verse, and the fact that the MC lived on earth until the integration. It's meant to be some lighthearted fun and will not be as serious or gritty as Defiance.

I think $15 tier is going to make a lot of people drop out as Patrons. Not permanently but people will sign up every other month. $10 should be the max and you will gain patrons. Like with the LoRG story. That author makes 5 to 6k a month but I guarantee if he raised the tier cost it wouldn't remain steady. 10$ is already more than many novels cost. Just my opinion.

Thank you for the input. To make it clear I won't change the Tier costs, just add another tier. Heaven's Chosen will still remain at 10$ as earlier, and it will provide even more chapters compared to now. In fact, every tier (Except survivor) will reward more content for the same money in August and forward. Nexus Whale tier is, as the name implies, a tier for those who 10$ or 15$ isn't any different, and want to support the Story. There are some added chapters, but not to the point of difference between Progenitors and Heaven's Chosen. I believe that the situation with LoRG is a bit unique, as he has put such a huge amount of chapters behind a paywall, which forces you to pay or wait MONTHS for RR to catch up. Many of the other popular stories (The New World/Dungeon Robotics/Wandering Inn/Shovels in Spades/Large Chests/Chrysalis) all have tiers higher than $10. I don't want anyone to pay more than they are comfortable with, which is why I have so many tiers. And as I said earlier, the rewards are only higher, not lower for the already existing ones.

I think everything is looking good, Double the amount of chapters to what is charged Is fair I feel. One thing I would like you to think about is still having bonus chapter patreon goals occasionally. Just feels nice getting bonus chapters on occasion and i feel it might get people to become a patron or upgrade tiers that might not have otherwise done so. I will probably be a whale soon, i need more chapters in my life.

Wow, I didn't know LoRG author made that much. More power to him i guess, i could just never get into it as the characters all feel flat to me.

DO NOT PUT Wandering Inn of Pirateaba as the same level. It's only 1 chapter preview for 5$ (3-4 days max) and support the author. The quality of writing is high and original.

Focus on the story, not on your wallet. Lot of author do a sprint and in the end crash.

It's a bit early to say but I think I'd do some holiday bonus events or something like that. It all depends on how my private stock of chapters look at the time though. Between planning out the story arcs and maintaining my release schedule it takes some time to build up a buffer.

I intend to drop level of support for a couple to keep hours at $10/mo. Agree with earlier comment. Asking for more will get more inconsistent support.

On this note. I'm likely one of your most recent subs. Here for Main story...employee 34 just doesn't do much for me. If main story disappeared...very good chance my sub will too. No pressure

In regards to the Employee 34 side story, I think that "Literal Corporate Slave" is just a tad bit dark, now that I think about it.

Even if there is a 10$ tier and a 15$ tier, i would also not have subbed. if i subscribe i want as much as possible, or i will just wait. and 15$ for the same speed as 0$ is not a permanent sub for me.

I am afraid that it is not as simple as $10 staying the same and $15 being added. I know it cant be directly compared and parteon is about supporting your favorite stories/authors but Kindle Unlimited is only $10/month. The way I see it, it is either: I am up to all available chapters or I am not. The number of chapters really doesn't matter that much. If I cant read another chapter because there is none, it is fine. If I can't read another chapter because I haven't paid enough, it is not that great and I may as well be behind on RR for free. I will say this is purely personal preference but I will either opt for the tier giving me all the chapters or stay away. That said, have you thought about different kind of rewards for higher tiers? It could be anything like weekly/monthly chats or ability to design one item to be featured in the story (within reason ofc). There is a reason why so much money in games is made from purely cosmetic items that bear no impact on the gameplay so I urge you to go that way ;). Create tiers with fancy names, get discord with different roles based on tiers so people can show off. Make a couple polls a month that give limited options (chosen only by you) for what a bonus chapter will be about that can be voted only by people from higher tier (but the chapter itself should be available for everyone). If you decided to go for a higher tier that may be a way that is less jarring? At least for me that would be more palatable. Just remember this is your story and your patreon so go with what you believe is the best.

What I have seen from multiple authors is that when too many higher tiers are added, the chapters to the lower tiers are often missed somehow. Us lower tiers enjoy supporting. Yet we appreciate the extra chapter included as well :)

I also mostly care about being up to date and not the specific amount of chapters. Im definetly not paying thrice what i pay for azarinth healer, the only other story i Patreon. Maybe if you would reduce the price, more people who pay, would acumulate over the months and you would make the same or even more money.
