When designing Inara's outfit I actually decided to look up what a modern nun would be wearing while working as a coach, and I basically found the outfit you see above (although I added the jesus fish pin on her visor just to reinforce the fact that she's a nun). It turns out most practicing nuns these days don't actually wear habits and robes. There's a lot of stuff like that where you see it in porn and other media, but it's actually totally absent in real life. Like, schoolgirls in Japan don't actually wear bloomers in PE class, but you wouldn't know that if you've ever watched anime.
