It took me a few episodes to get into this drama, but I am fully onboard now and am enjoying it a lot. I really hope you include “Our Blues” as part of your summer vibes, Cait!

Dream

If you remember first episode of Rise of Bangtan, Koreans achieved "true democracy" in the late 80s (In the time period of Reply 1988), and it was done through numerous student protests. President at the time seized the power through military coup, and he was a very violent and notorious dictator. It is still a sensitive subject in Korean history, but if you were a young liberal soul trying to speak the truth in 1988 South Korea like Bora, you were severely punished and your family too. That is why the father is angry at her even though he knows Bora is doing the right thing, and she is just fighting for everyone's basic rights..

Wow, thank you for the information. Reply 1988 is my ultimate favorite Kdrama series, and I learned about the importance of Bora's protest just now. And it gave me goose bumps when you related it with that statement from Rise of Bangtan about achieving "true democracy" in the 80s. It's nice to learn new things everyday. :)

I enjoy your reply 1988 reaction, but the Netflix version is really different from the original, so I can't feel the original taste. There are too many cuts And it is fatal that most of the background music has changed. The original director is very famous for his good choice of music.

OUR BLUES is so amazing and it's my favourite K-drama this year!!!! :D

Love watching this with you Cait as you are so compassionate and empathetic. The students' protest in Korea is similar to what happened here in Hong Kong recently but unfortunately, Hong Kong has gone from being one of the freest places on earth to the least freest now :C

Cait, I can’t wait to finish this drama with you..it’s amazing how you catch on to a lot of the meanings and empathize with the story..I’m looking forward to you binge watch. I watched episode 8 and on like 10 times so far. That’s when I really start enjoying this drama🤗

It was the era of military dictatorship. People demonstrated, were caught, tortured, and, in worse cases, died. Most of the demonstrations started with university students. Bora represents them here. Bora's father was also an intellectual who went to college at that time, so he must have thought that the demonstration she was doing was right. But I think he can't go out to support his family. If he are caught demonstrating, he will lose his job and be labeled by the government, making it difficult for their family to live in the future. That's why he secretly cheered for the student who was demonstrating in the beginning drama, but when his daughter said she would, he couldn't cheer for her. The fact that he actually agrees with Bora's actions also appears in this scene when he smokes and talks to his friends at the police station. His friends tell him to scold Bora and teach her not to do that again, but he says why should I do that to my daughter when she has done nothing wrong? Meanwhile, in real history, a university student was tortured to death, and the people who were angry at this fact drove out the military dictatorship through protests throughout the country and succeeded in democratization. In 2017, there was a movie about the incident and it was number one at the box office https://youtu.be/19hvVaeJ4tI
