It was the taxi driver that stabbed him and reason is in the past. Remember the first time she was kidnapped and she escaped he was pursuing her in the taxi and hit her with the car and Sun Jae jump to save her? And then he and the taxi driver fought until the police got there and arrest him. The second time he kidnapped her he was there again to save her, that's why he went after him, because in his mind Sun Jae was the one who kept him from killing Im Sol. The ex boyfriend was there for another reason that you will find out later.

*This is not a spoiler since I haven't watched the rest of the eps due to a trip and delayed it cuz it would be fun watching it and theorizing with you guys*. I don't know if you figured it out, but when Sol said wasn't it supposed to be 15 years instead of 14 - she's wondering why he was locked up a year later. She didn't lose a year. Sunjae's original death happened on dec 31 2022/jan1 2023. She went back to jan 1st 2023.
