Been making this soap for YEARS. Very good cleaning ability, and goes a LONG way. I add a few drops of essential oils to add a scent to it, but it's not necessary. I have several military mortar cans filled with boxes of Borax, Washing soda, and Fels Naptha soap bars, to make this. The mortar cans are waterproof. I keep them in the garage.

You can make washing soda from baking soda. Washing soda is Sodium Carbonate. Baking Soda is Sodium BiCarbonate. To "get rid" of that extra carbon, you need a stainless steel pan, a burner, a stirring stick or spoon, and ventilation! Heat the baking soda in a pan while stirring gently. Make sure this is well ventilated, because the process creates CO2, which you breathe OUT not in, so it takes the O2 out of the local air. The soda will "bubble" during the process. When it stops bubbling, turn off the burner and let it cool. Voila, washing soda.
