Tom at PAX Unplugged

A reminder that I am at PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia this weekend with my Into the Wilds Battlemap Books. If you missed the Kickstarter, or want to grab some extras, this is your best chance to get them!

We'll also have a bunch of free stuff, and the delightful duo from Abyssal Brews will be there with me on Friday and Saturday too with some swag of their own.

If you are attending the convention, make sure to come and say Hi or challenge me to a game of rollies. We will be at Booth #4300 in the back right corner.

Bharzul

Stone Palace Entrance Hall & Throne Room

The Stone Palace is enormous, sprawling over dozens of levels both above and below ground. The sections of building that are visible from the outside are just the tip of the iceberg. In times of emergency the Palace could easily house every citizen within Bharzul. Some parts of the palace are centuries old, while new sections are constantly being added or renovated.

The Palace and city are presided over by a council of five elders, led by the King. Despite being democratically elected, these 5 seats have stayed in the same families for centuries, largely due to the successes of their leadership.

The current King is Braun Lodbrook VII. Like many of his kin, he is wary of outsiders. The dwarves of Bharzul have seen the avarice of other cities lead to their downfall and that of their allies, and they have little trust that the same won’t happen again. However the wealth of Bharzul relies largely on trade with others so visitors to the city are allowed, although closely watched.

Hideouts & Lairs

Brass Dragon Lair

Along the Eastern side of the Boreus Desert is a labyrinth of stone valleys seemingly carved into the desert. Even those familiar with the region can easily get lost, especially when a sandstorm settles in obscuring what little can be seen. Scattered throughout the maze are the remains of a civilization that once lived here, facades carved into the rockface and elegant structures within. Time and erosion have left little evidence of who used to live here, but there are several more recent inhabitants.

The greatest and most fearsome of these is the Brass Dragon Petralidon who has claimed a crumbling temple as his lair. He allows the other lesser creatures to reside in the labyrinth as they are a useful deterrent to any who may disturb him, but even they fear to come too close. Those who do risk a peek are likely to hear the dragon deep in very one-sided conversations. For a being that so values solitude, he is strangely chatty.

Into the Wilds

Shops & Traders 04

Sawville and Sons Tailors - Sawville & Sons has been a family run business for 10 generations, and has a reputation of being the best in the city. Their work is flaunted at every major ball and banquet, and waits for custom couture can be months long. The current generations of Sawville's running the tailors are actually all women, but the 'and Sons' brand name is too strong to change.

Chaste Morgana Bank - Now a nationwide chain of banks, this was the first Chaste Morgana. To most they are just a place to safely store their savings, make currency exchanges and take out loans, but for those who take more time to investigate it seems clear that the only way for them to have grown so quickly is through underhanded methods.

Witchwood Microbrewery - Famous for their GobHoblin Mead, this relatively provincial brewery has seen a huge influx of orders and visitors from the city since they were featured in a Gazetteer targeted at middle-class young professionals. Now they are somewhat overwhelmed fending off hoards of bearded visitors with top knots, while their jealous competitors seek to undermine them.

False Frog Trading Post - The False Frog is apparently a no-gold business. They only accept trade in goods or services, and are very good at getting the better end of the deal. If you are unable to pay, there is a job board on the back wall filled with listings of various value. It seems this is how the trading post really makes its money, by giving low value goods to travelling adventurers for jobs that the proprietors get paid for in actual currency.

Elazar’s Vampire Lair Scene

Almost everyone agrees that the Elazar Household at the top of the hill is a creepy place at best. Children dare one another to get close enough to touch the heavy iron knocker on the front door before running away squealing, and even the bravest of the townsfolk only walk past if absolutely necessary. The current occupant is Emmanuel Elazar, a pale, gaunt man whose thin features and long sleek hair make him appear much younger than his 50+ years. He very rarely leaves the house, but it somehow always seems empty anyway.

Characters of Dorran

Princess Tillith Dorran - Tillith Dorran is the young daughter of the previous Emperor and Empress who died in suspicious circumstances at sea. Not yet old enough to hold the title herself, she has nonetheless been thrust into a position of power. There are some at court who seek to wield power themselves by controlling and manipulating her, but she is not as meek as many assume.

Tierra Windlass - Tierra Windlass is the current Guild Master of the Dorran branch of the Adventurers Guild. She holds members to the high standards and moral code passed down from Ferric Dorn and while seen as overly strict by some, she always leads by example.

Señor Estrane - The Chimaera Grand may not be the largest theatre in the city, but its has the longest waiting list for tickets. The productions put on there are known throughout as the very best of entertainment, and for members of high society, patronage is all but expected. The outstanding showmanship comes not only from the talented troupe of bardic performers and musicians, but in the use of illusionary magics to transport the audience to another world. It is rumoured that the proprietor himself, the extravagant Señor Estrane, casts and weaves these images from behind the curtain.

5e Adventures

Alturmentis for 5e & PF2E

Deep in the depths of this world lie unknown numbers of oddities. Terrifying creatures with abilities that few could ever imagine. One such creature, the Altumantis, is particularly devious as they charm their prey into following them to their lair where they meet their untimely end. Highly intelligent creatures, they show others visions of that which they desire most while leading them to their demise. Someone managed to survive an encounter with one and has now mounted its skull firmly on the end of a handle forging a formidable mace unlike any other. You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Altumantis for 5e & PF2E

The first reports of these creatures came with muddied confusion as miners went missing, having seemingly left their tools behind and walked off. With no sign of a struggle, there was little for the others to follow and learn of what happened. It wasn't until one miner managed to break free from the hypnotic influence of the Altumantis that more was learned about them. While there is still much that is left unknown about these creatures, it's understood that they are remarkably intelligent and utilize their hypnotic abilities to lure others into their lairs where they meet their untimely demise.
