This is the complete variant set for this weeks maps. It includes high resolution Day, Night, Clean, Simple and Tile variants.

This map set is part of the Bharzul series.

Background

Despite having a reputation for being earth-dwellers and lovers of rock, the Dwarves of Bharzul have an equal affinity for the night sky. Many of their lore-masters will consult the celestial records when debating historical currents and events, and the common folk take guidance from the phases of the planets and moons when making important decisions.

Astronomer Cri runs the Observatory, which is located on a small plateau in the mid-city. The record halls are open to the public by appointment, and the gallery is often filled with dwarven schoolchildren viewing the planetarium. Cri has a deep love for the stars and planets, and it is her greatest joy to share it with others.

Design Notes

Observatory - Astrolabe

  • 01 – Entrance Hall
  • 02 – Celestial Records– Records of celestial movements have been kept for the entirety of Bharzul’s history. It is the primary role of Cri and her assistant to maintain and continue these records for posterity. Not all logs are kept here though, the record chamber was filled long ago, and the older more fragile tomes are kept in the Depository.
  • 03 – Astrolabe – The floor, walls and ceiling of this room are an accurate star chart of the night sky as seen from Bharzul. In the centre is the Astrolabe mechanism, which can be orientated to point to any of the major constellations. Doing so also rotates the telescope above to point directly at the chosen stars.
  • 04 – Chart Display – Star charts and astronomers’ tools are on display here for public viewing.
  • 05 – Generator – The astrolabe and planetarium require large amounts of power to function accurately, so Cri designed a system that converts water into high pressure steam. This system is expensive to run and potentially volatile, so it is not often used in the city, but it is a useful as a local generator for the kind of precision engineering that the Observatory requires.
  • 06 – Astronomer’s Quarters – These are Cri’s quarters, but she can be found sleeping in the telescope’s viewing chair as often as her bed.
  • 07 – Elevator – One of many in the city powered by running water.

Observatory - Telescope

  • 08 – Gallery – The narrow gallery overlooks the central planetarium and telescope. The planets very slowly rotate around the room, mimicking their actual orbits in real time.
  • 09 - Astronomical Telescope – The largest most accurate telescope in existence, created by highly skilled dwarven engineers. A smaller version of it sits in the observatory tower at the Mage’s College in Dorran.
  • 10 – Balcony – Almost all buildings in Bharzul double as strategic defensive locations and the observatory is no exception.
