Background
Centuries ago, there was a warlord who gathered ancient artifacts and used them to control an army of dragons, sending them into battle alongside his forces. This warlord gained the name of ‘The Dragon Khan’. In order to find a way to oppose the Dragon Khan, a group of dragon worshipping mages and wizards came together to create a mighty weapon designed to end the life of the creatures they revered, so that none of the them would have to suffer the indignity of being controlled by a human.
They used their knowledge of arcana and divine magic to create a tool that separated magic from flesh, a spear that they called the Dracana Mortis. After the war with the Dragon Khan was won, the spear was hidden away in a temple dedicated to the glory of dragons, but a shadow organisation, known only as The Omen Speakers, sought out the weapon, and attempted to use it to end all life. They infiltrated the dragon temple and conducted a dark ritual in secret, but couldn’t control the magic they sought to create and a great wave of death exploded out, killing the Omen Speakers, Dragon Worshippers and all creatures within a few miles.
Because of this, no one has dared to enter the temple since, not knowing what caused the pulse of destruction. Over time some of the plant life has begun to grow back in the area, and stories of a hidden treasure deep within the temple mean that curiosity may overcome some of the initial caution for any group of adventurers passing through.

Design Notes
This map set was commissioned by Callum Hiscock, and many of the designs and ideas listed below are theirs.
Dragon Cult Temple 01 – Grand Hall
- 01 – Arrival - A wide steep set of stairs up the mountain side leads to the temples main entrance. A pair of dragon statues flank a large pair of golden doors.
- 02 - Entrance Lobby – Two staircases lead upwards to another pair of golden doors. The stairs are lined with upright sarcophagi, adorned with the head of a dragon.
- 03 – Scullery
- 04 – Kitchen – Despite not being used for a long time, the stoves still seem to be heated by pipes emerging from the back wall.
- 05 – Pantry
- 06 – Wine Storage – Similar to the heat in the kitchen, the wine store seems to be cooled by air emanating from pipes in the wall.
- 07 – Grand Hall – 4 long tables sit either side of a wide aisle that leads to an incredibly lifelike statue of a blue dragon’s head mounted on the back wall, its open jaw touching the ground. A few skeletons seem to be seated at the table, remnants of members of the dragon cult killed by the arcane blast. A door is hidden behind the blue dragon’s head, accessible by entering its mouth.
Dragon Cult Temple 02 – Inner Temple
- 08 – Central Chamber – A pentagonal table sits in the centre of the room. Around it are 5 large golden gates leading to different chamber in the temple. The northern gate depicts Tiamat and Bahamut in battle, their crossed wings barring entry. The other 4 gates are unlocked.
- 09 – Crematorium – The head of a large red dragon is mounted above the entrance. Half of the room is taken up by an enormous machine spouting fire. Three fire elementals are trapped in cages attached to it and seem to be feeding the inferno. Pipes similar to those in the kitchen (04) take some of the heat out of the room.
- 10 – Library – The head of a large black dragon is mounted above the entrance. Stacks of books fill the high room from floor to celling. A small shrine is found in the back corner.
- 11 – Morgue – The head of a large white dragon is mounted above the entrance. This room is partially covered in ice, some magic seems to keep it permanently cold. 5 stone slabs on the southern wall are used for human corpses, while an enormous slab on the northern wall seems large enough for an adult dragon. Pipes similar to those in the wine store (06) seems to take some of the cold air from the room.
- 12 – Chapel – The head of a large green dragon with a broken horn is mounted above the entrance. An empty fountain sits in the back corner. A number of stone benches face a raised platform. In the middle of the platform is a gently glowing green lantern.
- 13 – Grand Staircase – The skull of a large dragon sits in a dais in the centre of the room. Stairs lead down to 14
Dragon Cult Temple 03 – Great Burial Chamber
- 14 – Stairs lead up to 13. Two large statues face another staircase leading down to 15
- 15 – Dragon Burial Chamber – An cavernous room so large the outer walls are not visible. The bones of many dragons are buried below the earth here, carried to this place after their deaths. In the centre of the room, the spear ‘Dracana Mortis’ sits on an altar. A number of skeletons are on the floor, seemingly thrown back from the weapon during the ritual.
- 16 – Cultists Tomb – In the past, some of the members of the dragon worshippers who spent their life serving the temple were buried here, alongside the dragons.
