Castles, Forts & Keeps

Viking Fort

The fort is situated on a promontory overlooking a large inlet. It acts as the first line of defence and lookout for any hostile forces trying to push their way inland to the towns and villages along the river. However, this is not the reason it was originally built.

Perched atop a narrow spire of rock is a stone archway. Its origins are unknown, and it is far older than any settlement or civilisation in the region. For many travelling through the area by ship, it is a curiosity, but for the local folk it is a powerful mythical object.

Swamp Fort

The Ebenmoor was once a beautiful, fertile land home to numerous large towns and cities. After the ruin of Elaria, the lands flooded and evil seeped into the air. It became home to nameless monstrosities and most that hadn’t been forced out fled, but some sparks of civilisation clung on.

This fort was once a forward watchtower on the region’s borders, and so was not as deeply affected by the disasters. However, it was no longer needed, as nothing remained to defend, and so it was abandoned. Over time it was inhabited instead by a variety of humanoid creatures for whom the swamp was a more agreeable domain. As this new community outgrew the fort, additional small huts and cabins were built on stilts attached to the strong stone walls.

Despite the dangers of the ‘moor, it exudes a strong draw for adventurers seeking lost treasures and secrets. Communities like these offer a rare respite and opportunity to restock, but the wise would do well to remain wary and keep up their guard nonetheless.

Into the Wilds

Shadowfell 01

Fell Watchtower - This structure looks out over the eerie landscape below. It seems abandoned, but as you walk by you can feel something watching, and waiting.
Fell Chasm - Large cracks and voids in the earth lead to an endless darkness. There is no sign of life or consciousness emanating from below, but a faint whispering can sometimes be heard as you turn away.
Fell Clifftop - Small huts line the road, shadows of their material counterparts. Someone must have lived here once, but no longer. A shrine beneath the tree suggests they still visit from time to time.
Fell Tomb - The carved face on the tomb slowly morphs and changes even as you look at it, until it mirrors your own. A beckoning call echoes from the room beyond.

Palace Throne Room Interior Scene

Since the city’s founding, it has been ruled over by the Dorran dynasty. For most of the family’s history, there has been peace and content within the empire. Through trade and negotiations, the city of Dorran has grown fast and strong, and their external enemies have been kept at bay.

However, the previous emperor and his wife died under suspicious circumstances while at sea. The current emperor is their young daughter, Tillith Dorran. Due to her age and inexperience, she if advised by a group of ministers. In the years since her reign began, corruption has seeped into the higher echelons of society, while poverty takes over those at the bottom. Groups have appeared throughout the city and the empire, talking of overthrowing the emperor through open rebellion.

Some believe that the source of corruption is her Prime Minister, Eli Trasp, whispering lies and deceit in her ear. In the hope of averting civil war the party have been hired to assassinate the Minister by one of the larger rebel groups. However, he rarely leaves the young empress’s side and is protected at all times by both her royal guard and his own. In order to carry out their mission, the party will have to sneak into the palace and catch him unaware.

Beckon of the Beast by Alex LeFort & David N. Ross - 5th to 7th Level

In the remote wilderness, Miagon, the coalition watched in horror as a force of beastmen laid siege to the fort mere weeks after Thorne's incarceration. The Gaol's comparatively meager defenses were overwhelmed, Thorne and his lieutenants freed, and the tables turned as the former guards found themselves locked in the very cells they once guarded.

Now, Thorne and his followers linger in the battered remains of the fort, interrogating their captives and preparing for a grand ritual. Deep in the bowels of the Gaol, Thorne believes he can fully manifest an aspect of Miagon into the Universe, ushering in an age of bestial dominion. As the full moon approaches, time grows short to prevent this calamity.

Beckon of the Beast
