Hello Everyone and welcome back to another Dev Blog!

Working on this opening was a huge leap for me, involving many new areas I have never tapped into or just not deep enough, like:

- Cutting music
- Syncing picture to music
- Planning out scenes
- Working on backgrounds
- Using effects and texture in animation
etc etc.

So I spent like 75% of the time with planning and learning and only 25% with drawing (and another +50% with error correction and technical difficulties :D)

First, the original show Hataraku Onii-san has a kinda shaky effect on all characters and a slight painted texture, so this was the first task to solve and this was my final pilot:

For this I created 2 custom textures in Clip Studio and saved them as PNG to then import them to Toon Boom. The outlines are made with the texture file as "color", because if I used it as a texture, the line edges would be pixelated and would have sem-transparent parts too. The painty effect on the colors is actually a set of 4-5 different textures I changed around every 3-4 frames and then repeated the cycle. I also added a cutter filter, so that the effect would only show on the layers where I put the characters.

For the shaky effect I added a mesh-warp filter, where I sligly morphed the screen, by dragging some anchor points around.

Then I just made a cycle of the 2 states every 10 frames.

After this, I was mostly set for the style. These steps took really long but were necessary to imitate the original style and I am really happy with the result and I only had to do this once, in later videos I can use the same textures and elements. :)

You can see at the top what the opening looked like in sketches. I figured I should not only do storyboarding, but include the movements too, so I can see better after coloring them, what I initially planned. I also adjusted and expanded the scenes with additional movements or frames, just to make them whole.

Here are some WIPs and smaller parts of the animation, that were later merged. Some were slightly adjusted too.

The Bulls: This was my fav scene I think, I like drawing full bodies, and it was the only scene with some nudity. :D Originally, I didn't plan to draw any dicks, it was supposed to be censored all along, to just show huge black blocks and leave the rest to your imagination. ♥

Also, if you followed the original show, the right bull is actually... passed on, he became a steak... but I really liked his cute design, so I wanted to include him out of respect.

One more thing: the original show had a painted texture on the backgrounds too, so I painted another texture just for that in Clip Studio and used it as a general filter on all background layers.

The Pool: I worked the most on this scene I think. the bear looked originally completely different but his style didn't fit the show, so I redesigned him (he is an OC). I also made a few different layers: Sky with clouds, amusement park, bushes + pool, slide + water and the splash at the end.

Prostate Exam: ... yeah, there is a window right behind them on the left :D It's actually a roleplay fetish of mine and I love doctor-patient videos with prostate massages and such, so I wanted to include such a scene.

I likes this one a lot, because of the warm colors, lotsa burgundy and purple color with some sunny yellow lights to keep balance. Also, at first the big guy wasn't gonna pour his drink on his dick, but as I was coloring it, I thought it would add a nice touch. :D
Also, this was the part where I realized that I drew the eyes of the characters too large and I corrected them on previous frames too.

There were scenes, where some elements were in front of the characters but belonged to the background so I had to use an extra overlay just for them to add the painted texture. This was also a revised scene, originally his pants were already down, but making them slide down gave the scene some extra charm imo.

The 2 extra buddies, Hachitani (black-white cat) and Nezazono (bunny). I plan to put them in later eps, especially because Hachitani is such a weird and lewd char, he has a lot of potential :Q__

This is what the title looked like at first. I made the title in Clip Studio and cut it in small pieces. I also wanted to add some tails growing out of the S of "buddies", but it didn't look good, so I scapped that idea. After that I added a bunch of layers for the background, with houses, trees, skyscrapers, clouds, etc, but because of the music, I had to merge the 6 layers into 3.

All in all I think I did my best for a first try where I had to invest a lot of effort into re-learning the style and adapting it into an animation, but I also think, that now that I can focus more on the drawings, I can do a lot better next time and maybe I will make a V2 opening one day.

Thanks for reading this, I hope you found something useful. And as always, if you have questions, let me know and I help wherever I can. ♥

It's super interesting, I think that few people realize all the work that is behind all this ...! It's amazing all the love you can put into your designs/animations, you will always impress me

Thank You♥ You make animations too, so you know aswell, even if you work hours on something, you may end up with just a few frames that barely last 1 second. But it helps to invest time in the sketch and animate that a bit too, I can see the end product better and not get discouraged XD
