The fact that a random person killed Ivar , it was merely the last "checkmate" - the battlefield was a chess match between Alfred and Ivar- taking it to the next level from their games as kids. And the battle showed how Ivar was a mastermind "chess player", shown by how his soldiers mimicked his moves and strategies on the field. At the same time, Alfred learned from the best and at the end Alfred decided to show honor to someone he probably looked up to in a way growing up by ending the battle on honorable terms.
