Rough sketch finished, here I've laid out every character in the banner, and approximate final position. With red being foreground, blue being midground, and green being background. Details are very scarce in this stage, as I'm only getting the very rough steps here.

Some characters are far sketchier than others. Often I will do a second sketch ontop of an old sketch such as with Mercilia, where I will refine the shapes and pose further. Compared to Seriva which I felt I understood well from the initial rough sketch, complete with centerlines showing the angle of her face.

From here I'll be going in to do the cleanup and 'lines' part. I don't actually do linework for any of my drawings, I often do a clean sketch which I call lines, but is actually still very rough. I will show this in the "lines" & "underpaint" step. However, when I approach a picture, I am not looking at it as sketch>lines (final image)>color.

To me the lines, underpaint, and overpaint steps are still establishing the final result, with the final result being on a single solitary layer, and to fix a mistake, rather than having to go back and draw the lines and recolor everything, I will cut, move, distort, and manipulate the final image, and paint ontop of it without hesitation.
