You might also have noticed that Sabei and Jouya wear intricate sashes. Elves in Alabasta wear intricately woven sashes to designate their family lineage, the region their hail from and more. Elves of Prima Alabasta commonly weave horizontal patterns into their sashes, and usually include designs with symbolic meaning. The elves of Secundo, spiritual animists in nature have less intricate sashes, comprised of vertical stripes. You can see an example of this if you've seen Chibi Irya on the front page! From our writing primer— One thing to note, the elves in Alabasta (whether Prima or Secundo) wear family sashes. These are wide (.3 to .5 meters wide) and very long (length is based on the family and region they hail from, it can be as short as 2 meters to as long as 6, it depends.) ornate sashes that are woven by entire families and given to an elf when they reach adulthood. Styles differ between the two countries (Prima and Secundo) and it's obvious to them who an elf's family is and where an elf comes from (down to the province) just based on the sash they wear. This can be worn anywhere and in any way. but it has to be worn over the clothing, hiding it is considering an insult. (servants and slaves of the Menagerie have the semi sashes taken from them or don’t have them to begin with. (by society this means they are orphans.))
