I personally love to see revamps like this, side by side and see the different improvments.

Its a decent way to study in my opinion, Its like having an under-painting to paint on, The idea and work is already there, all i have to do is study the image, play with it and figure out how to make it better!

I start by grabbing my square brush and just paint right on the image layer like a wet oil painting, Its pretty soothing to me. I use bold brushstrokes and colors , tryout New or interesting Techniques, and do a few color/value studies within the piece.
