I don't think Matt Christman personally is nihilistic, I think Chapo, the podcast, strikes a flippant, detached chord at the wrong times on the wrong topics sometimes. They sometimes have a "too cool for school" air and that sends the wrong message. I'm not slamming Chapo, I still listen sometimes, I know at the end of the day it's a comedic podcast but judging from comments on their podcast some of their listeners have picked up the detachment.
