Hey y'all,

I'll be doing a Griscom stream at 5 ET/4CT today, sorry for the tech issues but they should be sorted now. Come by and jump in the chat if you want to ask any questions.

Really excited for this week's bonus episode for patrons, we will be joined Milton Allimadi who will talk about the radical legacy of Walter Rodney, author of the crucial work "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa." I've linked to some talks he gave before he was assassinated in 1980 to prepared.

Also, next Monday I'm going to be talking with Ben Burgis on his show GTAA about Sartre particularly his work "Search For A Method" (I talked about it in a Griscom stream a couple weeks back) if you're interested I've pulled the opening section from Marxists.org.

- David

What We Are Reading:

Search For A Method, Sartre - 1960 (opening section)

The Persisting Relevance of “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa,”  Giovanni Vimercati - 2017

Watching:

Walter Rodney - Race and Class in Guyanese Politics

Walter Rodney - Crisis in the Periphery: Africa and the Caribbean

how would you approach a close friend who lives the entrepreneur/hustle lifestyle? they may be sympathetic to social welfare & criticisms of the jeff bezos’ & bill gates’, but they chafe a bit at any criticism of capitalism as well as getting taxed.

One of the things that convinced me about the reality of class interest are these kind of conversations with friends. You can persuade people on specific issues -- e.g. universal health care really cuts across political ideologies and experience -- and package it in a way that appeals to narrow self-interest, but I kind of accept the fact that the basis of these friendships isn't due to a shared political analysis. They know where I stand. I know more or less where they stand. That's pretty much all there is to it. The challenge is that everything within the society is going to reinforce the idea that entreneurship / the hustler life style is the way out. For others it might be about getting the right credentials and working in a white collar job. If it works, there's nothing you can say. If it doesn't -- and for many people it won't -- and the person ends up working in an Amazon warehouse, or some kind of similar service sector job, there may be an opening.
