DreamWorks’ toy brand turned movie franchise is back with Trolls Band Together. When I did my review of the last two films, while I didn’t like them, I was forgiving for providing some elements of quality. This time with Band Together, I feel like the Trolls have overstayed their welcome with their musical mess.

OMG! This is Shrek the Third all again! Same story problems as that film with it telling so many different stories that they can’t combine them together into one cohesive narrative and introducing a new character that’s a relative of one of the main characters. I’d never thought the Shrek the Third curse would come back for this one. After how infamously bad that film turned out, I thought Dreamworks would be more careful with making their third installment films in their franchises and it did look like they were improving with Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Kung Fu Panda 3 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Say what you will about them, but at least they’re better than Shrek the Third and this film and do a much better job of expanding their franchise’s respective worlds and evolving their characters that feel like worthwhile additions to those stories. I can’t believe Dreamworks regressed and brought back the same problems as Shrek the Third for this one. And really sad after the great success they had last year with The Bad Guys (looking forward to the holiday special coming to Netflix this month) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. This and Ruby Gillman really show that all of those successes were just flukes and that they are still just an animation studio with hit-or-miss films and with the success of Elemental and the possible success of Wish, it really shows that all that studio wars was for nothing.

Same, Mat. This review is all I need. Who asked for this movie?
