Hello friends!

Here it is! Finally! 40 minutes of Jonathan Blow, Derek Yu & Jim Crawford waxing lyrical about player discovery. This was one of the hardest edits I've ever worked on but I'm very happy with the final result. I hope you enjoy it. Expect full docs on The Witness, Spelunky & Frog Fractions over the coming weeks!

I'm off to GDC to film some more interviews today but I'll be checking in here to see your feedback. Let me know what you think!

Rediscovering Mystery - Noclip Documentary (feat. Jonathan Blow / Derek Yu / Jim Crawford)

In this special feature about video game mysteries, we talk to Jonathan Blow (The Witness / Braid), Derek Yu (Spelunky) and Jim Crawford (Frog Fractions) about the games that inspired wonder in us as children, and the fight to keep player discovery alive. Noclip operates entirely through the funding of its members.

I just told my wife this was out and she called you Danny Dyer. Fun fact

Excellent Danny! Looking forward to the rest of the videos. I guess I have to try and finish The Witness now, damn haha

Michael Brigham

What determines who gets listed on the patron credits? Just curious

Michael Fossbakk

Great doc! What happened to Jim Crawford in the second half/two-thirds of it, though?

Have you tried contacting Brendon Chung? The Gravity Bone guy. A doc on his stuff would be great.

Ben Williams

As always, a great piece of documentary making Danny. Having only completed The Witness yesterday it was great to hear from Jonathan Blow. I look forward to the next instalments. P.S I love the music in this one!

Brandon K Gann

Great work Mr. O'Dwyer! I can't for the next three episodes plus the GDC interviews!

Clay A Binkley

Still excellent! Their quality makes it so much harder to wait between pieces.

James Spibey

I absolutely loved it. It felt like you completely nailed the documentary but also felt very like an episode of the point. Can't wait for the next instalment.

An excellent addition to the series! This reminded me of growing up in a small town in the '90s and early '00s with no internet to confirm playground rumours. Looking forward to the next one!

chris bradley

great work sir, really interesting topic, good pace and length and nicely shot huzzah!

Piotr Kostecki

I deeply enjoyed this doc Danny, thanks for the splendid work :) Topic of in-game secrets was always my favorite. I'd like to say that the edits you make are getting better and better with every clip you upload. I loved the way you cut this one. Cheers!

Nice work!

btw Danny, there's a new page on patreon called "noclip productions" that I accidentally ran into. I was looking for your page from my work computer and didn't want to log on and type no clip and it was the first suggested page and yours was below. They don't have any backers and I'm not sure how long they've been there, but I would contact someone about it. It confused me for a minute. Wouldn't want new potential members to ask wtf.

Excellent work!

Ryan Riley

keep up the great work!

Bavo Debraekeleer

It even has Jonathan Blow ranting about AAA, love it!

There was a much shorter episode of The P*int hidden in there somewhere wasn't there! Good interviewees and tight editing but still felt a little over-long to me. It's a potentially massive topic - overwhelming perhaps? Like the new venue, although one shelf stacked with games risks looking much like another. The contributor clips worked very nicely.

It's funny how you spoke about trying to consciously not spoil something. In this era this is exactly the reason why for example for upcoming Mass Effect Andromeda (in huge MA fan) - I don't even watch trailers. I know I will buy it and I will enjoy it, so I'm trying to avoid spoiling anything. I did the same approach with some other games in last as well. Because temptation is there...just a click away...

Ben Williams

I'm the same. I just want to know enough to gauge if a game is worth my hard earned cash. I avoid as much as possible! I guess with the price tag that comes with making a game these days developers are willing to sacrifice mystery for money. Shame.

So far this is my favourite video, i hope to se more documentorys in the future with a general theme like this. Thank you.
