Hey Patrons,

We start another year of Patron shows with an update on what we're filming and publishing in January & February, the story of what happened when I went to film last month (spoilers; it wasn't awesome), our trip to LA next week, the effect of turning on some ads, why we now have thousands of video game tapes in our possession and what we plan to do with them.

Damn, good on you to take all those tapes! Monumental task to digitize them but I think it'll be worth it.

I believe I'm out of the loop here, but what would be the reason not to turn on monetisation for all content on the noclip channels? I think the average youtube consumer has a positive understanding that the ads they get served help the creators they watch. I believe people are more supportive of monetisation now and are happy creators are paid for their work.

Yea no worries - so when we originally started Noclip (and for the first 5+ years) we talked about not having ads as a big part of the pitch. Basically to insulate us from the need to get clickbaity etc. I think over the past 5 years we've realized we're not really playing that game and as the video library continues to accrue views we're leaving some money on the table. So that's the reason I'm going into detail on it.

I'm really happy with the noclip crew finding and trusting their own voice in covering the games industry and its games. But of course I'm wondering how this changes the idea and work relationship of the "Patreon Production Team"; voting for the greatest hits was something that acctually took place and worked out quite well. This does not mean I'm against these changes, but maybe we find another type of creative contribution - putting all that swarm intelligence to use. PS Saving the tapes is so awesome! I'm very glad being part of your preservation efforts. It's destiny!
