Hey Patrons!

If you missed the big news of our relaunch in March then read that post here.

I figured with all that news and the ending of Hades: Developing Hell this was a pretty good time to do a Q&A session so please get those questions into the comments below and I'll answer them in a video soon.

Thanks folks, talk soon!

Hey Danny, not directly related to the mentioned topics, but I'm curious what the process is for crafting a narrative in documentaries. Do you create a set of questions you know will get you the answers you want for the story you're trying to tell, or do you just shotgun a load of questions and figure it out in post? Thanks!

Jordan Middler

Hey Danny! Your access to Hades felt pretty unparalleled in terms of project likes this and as such I think it's probably my favourite of the 5 years. If there was a game from the past you could have this type of in the trenches look at a games first year, what would it be? Very best.

Bavo Debraekeleer

How are you and the family doing, except for going mad?! 😜

Landon Robinson

Would it be possible/warranted to get an extended epilogue/post Mortem from the team at SG? Maybe it’s not necessary since you already know the arc - but I’d always take more interview material from those folks!

Christopher Kelly

With the Hades docuseries, where did you originally think you would end the story before lockdown and everything changed the structure? How was it compiling all of that zoom footage as well in the episodes?

Anonymous

Have you considered tackling a Hades style project (weekly/monthly look into a studio) with a temporary larger team? Maybe with one person dedicated to embedding themselves for b-roll and such so the main team can still work on other projects. Or have you thought about having a temporary b-team in general for side projects that aren't as big as the main ones. All the best for the future of Noclip.

Andrew McMillan

I'd love to know how you make notes in your footage to translate into editing. Do you watch all your footage and make notes of time stamps and stuff, or do you make notes during filming....or both? Super interested in that process.

Michael Middleton

This is probably more a question for the SuperGiant folks but Danny could provide some insight too. Do you think having this documented video process being present through the entirety of a game influenced the development of HADES in any ways? I know you and Jeremy weren't there 24/7 (especially after covid) but I'm curious if the documentary had any positive or negative feedback loops. Now that Supergiant is going on to start whatever their next big process is, this doc series also provides them with basically documentation where they can go back and analyze their workflow even further to see what worked and what could be improved

Logan Johnson

What indie games would you and the crew most like to cover next, released or unreleased?

Anonymous

Can we have all hades docs put into one chronological video? Problem solved...I have, in fact, never computed before 🤦‍♂️

Pocket Vinyl

Are you going to be continuing to work with Supergiant games on whatever their next project will be? With the good relationship you've cultivated, I'm sure a regular doc about their next game will come out eventually, but I mean as an ongoing thing. Or perhaps, is there chance of you documenting a different video game company continually while they work on something?

Logan Johnson

+1 for this question - especially cause it brings to mind something Amir said in the last episode about how filming this final episode of Developing Hell felt like part of finishing the game.

It seems that there have been a number of successful titles that have gone through the same Early Access development as you have seen with Hades. Do you think this type of development is good for the industry and do you believe it results in a better produced title? Do you feel that there are any downsides to this approach?

Hey Danny! I'm excited for the refresh of tiers for NoClip and the $10 and $20 ones are the most exciting. While I bumped up to catch Loot Box, I wanted to ask about the thing I'm most excited for: Greatest Hits. In the announcement video you said it should be a set time limit of a game needing to have been out for a set amount of years (I think you said 15?), but I was wondering do you think it would be better to limit it by console generation as well? For example, if you picked, say, nothing later than 2005, then you could say PS2, Gamecube, and OG Xbox (and handheld systems of the time) and prior, but you wouldn't look at games on those platforms after that (God of War II in 2007 is the most prominent example that comes to mind). I know it's kind of splitting hairs, but I am VERY excited for Greatest Hits and I would love to see as many games eligible as possible (within reason of course). Thanks as always for reading, Developing Hell was a treat to watch, and I can't wait for all that's in the pipeline from NoClip! Have a great day!

Hades used The Forge engine. What were some of the pros and cons of using it?

Would you guys be interested in doing a documentary on H3VR (aka Hotdogs, Horsehoes and Handgrenades)? It's a lovely game. And a question about the potential physical release of Hades or "hades 2.0", this will be a blu-ray set right?

Jacob Godserv

The Greatest Hits series sounds super interesting. I was curious what level of knowledge you're expecting for participation in the live calls? I don't have any dreams of being able to meaningfully contribute as I've never done any kind of serious video production beyond making clips for friends from VODs, but I was curious all the same.

Daniel Maurath

How did the final Hades series differ from your expectations when you first started filming? Did you give feedback on the game during early access? Any of that feedback translate to changes in the final game? Is there anymore insight into how the team managed the transition to remote work? I'm most curious about Paige's role and her experience of going from being the only remote employee to then being a part of a company where everyone is remote. There's a lot of worries in the tech industry on how hybrid teams will work and helping guide my own leadership team, so asking this completely selfishly.

Will Sessions ever come back? I know it's unlikely with GDC being cancelled for the foreseeable future, but some of these were quite unique and very interesting. Are extended cuts of interviews ever planned to return? I seem to recall the Jonathan Blow interview was quite long, and the doc, while fascinating, was only 40 minutes. And bonus question: would you consider Space Rangers 2 for Greatest Hits?

Disco Cat

Which cameras are you using ? How was your weekend ?

Gabriel Costa (Hired Sword)

What's your current dream project for NoClip? I figure it's probably a proper Half Life doc with the devs now that Valve is actually making games again but I'm curious if I'm wrong and there is something else. As for the recent changes I'm curious if Greatest Hits could be a way to finally do some Nintendo related docs (Zelda, Smash etc) since they seem pretty much unreachable through normal means? Thanks for the updates and for keeping the content coming throughout a tough year!

Josh Daniels

Will greatest hits be available to everyone and will it be included in early access. I wish all of the noclip community was allowed to vote and let the $20+ tiers colaborate. But you would probably just end up with the from software dock😅 Greatest hits nominations freelancer (2003) Knights of the old republic Real doc suggestions see above 😁

Björn Vahle

I wrote it before, but is there a chance you'll tackle Remedy for one of your next studio docs? I'd actually even settle for a Schafer-style rundown of their games, narrated by Sam Lake. 😁

Björn Blankenheim

In a recent update-video you said that your planning to release a more "movie-like-cut" of the Hades documentary, now that "you know the full arc of the story". Have you ever thought about doing a look back on the year (2020 in this case) based on the material you gathered over the last 12 month, now that "you know the full arc of the story"? Something lika a Supercut in the vein of the "year in x minutes"-videos by vox (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGQQbulRUjY). This might be an interesting perspective on the state of the industry... and on noclip of course.

Could we have Q & A sessions with game devs like Supergiant Games? Would love to know if Supergiant Games will give Xbox users the chance to play any of their other games on Xbox. Especially Hades. :-D Would be nice to let the patrons come suggestions to questions for a short Q & A part in the docs.

DMC4EVERUCCI

Question on the new tiers stuff! Will the greatest hits docs become publicly available eventually? (Like idk, after a few months/a year?) I'd love to see that content one day but I'm currently stretching myself *really* thin on my patronages 😞 Thank you so much for all of your great work!! Hoping for an interview/doc on thatgamecompany one day~

The Hades series was a lot of firsts for you guys - how you embedded, the long form multi-episode approach, getting content from the team, but most importantly the style of the series. You had the devs talking directly to us, and that made the connection to the team so incredibly powerful for me. Is it a goal to have your long form work be more like this in the future, when you can embed with companies again? I've never seen anything like it before, and although I love having your personality along with us, it worked so well that I'm just so pumped to see more like that. Even knowing that it'll be a long while, and you've got some other really cool things lined up that you can do while we are still stuck with this strange dimension we are in. Love you guys and all your work, and congrats again on finishing Hades and the renewed Patreon! I'm stoked to see Location Scout :D
