Finally!

Almost a year after it's initial filming our mini-doc on the early design challenges of The Elder Scrolls: Blades wraps up our series on Bethesda Game Studios. Thanks so much for your patience on this one, it was a feature we kept kicking down the road as their release kept getting pushed back. I'm sure the folks angry and the game's micro-transactions will take issue with it in some capacity (none of that stuff was finalized at time of recording), but I know a lot of you have been asking us for this one for a long time so I'm delighted to get it out in the wild.

What's else is coming soon?

Thank you so much for your support this busy month. In April we released 2 GDC interviews, 1 doc, 1 Bonus Level, 1 Supergiant Q&A, 3 behind the scenes features and a handful of trailers. We appreciate your funding and have a busy May lined up. In fact this week we've got our Telltale doc trailer and a new episode of the podcast. Your support is vital and much appreciated, so thank you once again.

Enjoy the show!

Danny

The Challenge of Designing The Elder Scrolls: Blades

Now that The Elder Scrolls Blades is available to play we look back at the inception of the game from our interviews in 2018, and the challenges the team at Bethesda Game Studios had in bringing Tamriel to the phone. A very curious video... Don’t think I have ever heard you do VO with so many caveats. In some ways it’s an interesting time capsule for a games development some time before release. In other ways it feels almost redundant and opens you up to more criticism, though you do try and mitigate that with the VO. I may have just left this unreleased or perhaps made it Patreon only.

Thanks, yea you're pretty much on point but I think the idea of unreleasing a video because angry gamers would get angry is very far from my creative values. I'm happy to let it be a time capsule and we've had so many people asking for it that I'm glad to have provided some context to those fans. But yeah, it was always going to be a "lose" with a certain audience. The script certainly tried to take as much of that impact as possible.

This one is... rough, but not through any fault of your own. I'm definitely looking forward to the Telltale one, however!

If the game didn't have the intrusive micro transactions the reaction would have been very different as with fallout shelter. If people are angry with the product presented in the doc that's a fault of the studio not the messenger. Would like to see a follow up to see how the commercial aspects overtook the vision as presented in the doc.

Quite a few of their design decisions makes more sense after watching that.

Just hear to say I enjoyed it :) I think its just hurt by the fact that it was filmed almost a year ago, clearly been changes since then. Sadly that kind of mature conversation is lost in you tube comments.

Sorry about those YouTube comments. The toxic gamers decided to pile in because they didn’t like Fallout 76 and now your hard work takes the hit. You did an amazing job, and it’s a great look at the development of the game. Thoroughly interesting, and well crafted! I hope the comments don’t get to you too much.

But honestly, I think this was a mistake. Just listening to Todd spout utter lies makes me feel uncomfortable watching this. I get your angle, but I think you should distance yourself and Noclip from Bethesda.

Ivan Mikulic

It's not the issue that people didn't like Fallout 76. People didn't like being lied to. Watch Todds E3 showcase. Watch the Noclip doc on F76. And then play the game. I would be willing to bett you would be as much 'toxic' as as anyone else.

I just have to say I really have enjoyed this series. I appreciate your attitude of respecting your own creative values over what others might say Danny. Keep up the good work and there will always be us that support you!

This is a tough one for sure, but I am always appreciative of the open and honest ways you put out the work, so while this does sit weirdly for sure, and the youtube comments suck more than any other NoClip project (usually they're quite nice!), I understand your rationale for releasing the doc. Thank you for being so transparent and specific in your goals, it makes me even more glad to be a patron knowing I'm backing a group with values
