Hey Patrons!

It's a brand new week, so how about a brand new video? In the second part of our FFXIV documentary series we look at the period between 1.0 and A Realm Reborn, and how the team worked hard on patches for the beleaguered game before ultimately destroying it.

Let me know what you think!

FINAL FANTASY XIV Documentary Part #2 - "Rewriting History"

In the second video in our three-part series, we talk to the team at Square Enix about the incredible decision to spend over a year patching the 1.0 version of the game, only to destroy it. Forever. Noclip operates entirely through the funding of its members. Danny, the project management method is Scrum not Scram, there is a mistake in the subtitles.

This was really awesome seeing that kind of insight into project management. It makes me feel like a sort of confirmation that the massive spreadsheets I do on my own work as being something worth while. :P Also, the sakura tree and wind in that last stand-up was really symbolic. Bravo. ;)

On the topic of subtitles, as they seem to be something people are sharing strong opinions on. It seems like an interesting discussion with no right answer. As Danny has mentioned the spectrum of "accuracy" vs "literary flow". I personally didn't have any problems reading them, but I also have an elementary level understanding of Japanese as well as some experience with reading a lot of anime fan translations. So, I'm probably not the best person to listen to on the matter. Japanese grammar is as far to opposite that of English grammar that I think is possible (a generalization, but...) with that in mind, I personally appreciated that they decided to favor accuracy in their translations over flow. Even with the awkwardness that might introduce to the general public.

This is great work! Can't wait to see what's next...

The story is just getting better! Can't wait for part 3. And I cannot even imagine all the hard work that was put into this game. I have now a newfound respect for Yoshida-San, his team and SE in general. Tremendous!

Also - I think a video tutorial from You partner in crime is warranted! The picture is beautiful and the colors are so warm and well adjusted. I want to learn how he does color correction!!

Episode 2 is a lot more coherent. I don't think you even needed Episode 1 in retrospect. You have some good secondary interviewees here but it still feels overwhelmingly like one man's story. His lesson in micro-management rambled on a bit - perhaps you should have asked him for the short version, the long version and then recorded an average value? :-) I felt that the UI conversation could have been illustrated better perhaps. My impression from Episode 1 was that the problems with the original release were primarily technical, but the solutions described here were about presentation and mechanics. The uplifting/redemptive music is still too much for me. It precludes the content of what is actually being said and it's too loud in the mix again. Thankfully it goes away towards the end! There are still obvious problems with the English captions. Sorry I don't have time to list them here.

If there had been more interviews with the development teams we might not have to use our imaginations quite so much. Maybe they will feature in Episode 3? I would like to hear the team from the original release discuss the problems they faced at the time but that doesn't look likely to happen.

Ah, another pleasure to watch. I never knew the story you're telling in this series, it's huge! Really appreciate the honesty and detail with which people behind the FF 14 are telling their view on the subject. Splendid work as always, thanks! :)

I'm really impressed how candid they're allowed to be.

Wow. Just wow. On to the next...

Finally saw it! It starts a bit technical and it being in Japanese doesn't really help. Great insight though and good if you want to learn more about game development. After 20 mins in it's all great again though with you narrating! ;)
