Hi! Just a cheeky little background for the film I'm working on, of an electrical socket.
This new project has 3D characters, but still has 2D backgrounds- so for the sake of cohesion I've tried to paint a background that doesn't have line art, which is pretty new for me. I don't think like a painter at all, the way they dig shapes out of colour and light, it's magic as far as I'm concerned. I just draw lines- I find a bit of the edge of something and feel my way around the outside, like trying to find my way through a house in the dark. So even though this is quite basic, I'm still pretty proud of it!

Also for those wondering why the electrical socket is sad- real world sockets just look kind of sad where I'm from! They've got sad eyes.

Backgrounds aren't the most exciting updates I know, but that's what I'm working on so that's what I've got! I'll aim to make some foregrounds soon though, so you can look at those too!

I just love the use of that stippled pointillism effect in the shading of surfaces here. The cord looks sinuous and alive, like a snake reacting to the flow of electricity. There is a kind of self-referential aspect to this as well, as the scene is lit from above- likely by a lamp, and this cord is likely from that same lamp. A lamp in a cold, inky black void illuminating its own plug and socket, somewhat like a snake eating its tail. I imagine the audio track for this would just be a continuous, low-frequency 50 Hz electrical buzz. The Australian grid is 50 Hz. It's a frequency every urban Australian's brain learns to filter out, as it's utterly ubiquitous. Here in Canada, our electrical buzz is a slightly higher 60 Hz.
