What do you call it, speedpaint? Is there a word for speedpaint but with animating? Anyway here's a timelapse of me designing a character, building a puppet, and animating them walking! (You can also skip to the end to see the completed animation, if you're not interested in watching me nudge bits of spider around.) I've figured out the dumbest way of anthropomorphising a spider's face and I'm sorry.

To clarify, this isn't a final shot in the film, the spider is just one asset of an unfinished shot.

Some explanations of stuff you see in the video:

-You'll notice there's an upside-down duplicate of the spider at the top of the screen. In the final shot, the spider will be walking on the ceiling, so that was just so I could see what it will look like but still draw it rightway-up.

-The rainbow ground and wheel aren't part of the final shot. Often when I'm animating a loop of someone walking, I'll add in a sort of conveyorbelt to match the footfalls to. Then if I'm moving the walk cycle across a scene, I have a clear indicator of how fast they're moving so I can match it up and their feet don't slide around on the ground.
In THIS particular case, the spider is also going to be rolling something along the ground (and by ground I mean ceiling), so I needed an additional guide to make sure the action of the spider's front legs would roll the ball along at the same speed as their walking.

-The spider's colours and markings will likely change in the final shot! They're an Australian huntsman- for those unfamiliar, there's a few varieties, but they're very common, very enormous house spiders (harmless though). I have a colour palette for the film that I've been adding to as necessary, which so far doesn't really have anything close to huntsman colours on it. I just picked colours based on photo references on my other monitor, but once the spider is in the final scene it'll be easier to fine tune and pick colours that compliment everything else. Thanks to the magic of symbol animation, I can also add markings, hair or whatever else while I'm in there. We'll see though!

Holy cow I had no idea how absolutely tedious it is to animate something. No clue!

It’s crazy to see how much work it takes for such a small animation.
