A snippet from today's Nanowrimo -

Granny ducked around the corner to where the landline phone hung on the wall. It was designed like an old-school rotary phone, but all the numbers were pushed buttons. One of those vaguely hipster-y things that coffee shops like this always seemed to have. Flannery turned to stare out the front window. A tram passed by at a casual pace. When it had passed, Flannery jumped.

Across the road, standing almost perfectly still and staring at the shop, were Jacob and William Grimm. Flannery gripped the edge of the counter, willing them to stay the hell away from the shop – and more specifically, her. She could practically feel their nasty, caustic energy from across the road. She hoped that her new protective talismans were enough to keep them away.

They noticed her see them, she could tell. Jacob waved casually, a slight smile coming to his face. Again, his smile didn’t reach his eyes. William also smiled, but his smile was wider, pulling almost unnaturally at his cheeks. There was something dark about the look in William’s eyes, something predatory.

Go away, Flannery thought desperately, grasping the bracelets on her left wrist. Go away. Go away! Go! Away!

A warm feeling crawled up her arm, starting at her wrist, and filled her chest like a deep, powerful inhale. She watched as Jacob and William both winced, breaking their eye contact with her. They shared a confused look. Confusing morphed into shock on Jacob’s face, while it turned into rage on William’s. Flannery glared at them.

“Go. Away.” She hissed under her breath. “You are not welcomed here. You will not cross our threshold today.”

The warmth spread from her chest, filling her whole body. She saw Jacob and William wince again, their feet moving slowly and awkwardly as they began to walk away. Flannery was in awe at it all. She’d done that. She could feel it. She’d done that! She made them leave with whatever weird power she supposedly had.

“GRANNY!” She shouted. “I did magic!”
