A snippet from my Nanowrimo writings for today:

Flannery shrugged, turning back around to face the front as the bell above the door rang. “Good morning, what can I get you?”

Elwood, from earlier, had been what Flannery would call ‘unintentionally intimidating’. This woman, with her sharp suit and no-nonsense ponytail and sharper-than-a-knife eyeliner, was very intentionally intimidating. The woman took a moment to…Flannery would say she was probably analyzing her. Almost like she was performing a threat assessment on her. Flannery felt a little uncomfortable at the intense level of scrutiny.

“Ms. Hood’s granddaughter, am I correct?” the woman asked.

“Yeah, that’s me.” Flannery said, her hackles rising a little.

The woman hummed considering. “I see the resemblance. Anyway, I’d like a large café latte to go. Soy milk. Double shot of expresso. No sugar. And a egg white and spinach breakfast sandwich.”

Flannery felt thrown by the comment, and it took her a moment to remember she was actually supposed to be putting the order into the computer. Who the hell was this woman and why was she so…sharp?
