[Weekly Update] I'm sick + Sick Day Movies (Patreon)
Content
Just a quick health update: You may have noticed I didn't post a new video or post our script this week. That's because I've been feeling sick for the past week. It's nothing major, just headache, fatigue and runny nose. But work progress has been slow as a result. In any case, the video is halfway edited, and should go live in a few days. Apologies about the delay.
CHANNEL UPDATE
As expected, nothing has changed on our schedule this week. I do want to hold another poll and make a fan request video, but I have no idea what options to put in. I'm still in the process of finding all the Donnie Yen movies and some of the Cynthia Rothrock movies, so those two are out of the question.
I also want to do another Tokusatsu video, but neither Shin Ultraman nor Shin Kamen Rider gave me much to talk about.
Anyway, now that we are a few video into our new color scheme, I'm beginning to get a few of its limitation. Simply put, I enjoy the color a lot, but the transitions and animations are a bit too low-key. A preciously suggested idea of changing color base on the film turns out to be a no-go, as it heavily affects the legibility of on screen texts.
That means I'll be redesigning some (if not all) of the animations. It'll be a process, and probably will take the rest of the year to do. But at least the channel logo and banner arts will remain the same.
Finally, for this month's bonus video... I should stop updating on this, because I never end up talking about the movie I said I would.
Anyway, I was thinking of doing something different. I wanna take a look at a bunch of different time travels movies.
MEDIA TALK
Do you have a favourite sick day movie? Mine is Bill & Ted.
I think for most people, they ideal sick day movies are always nostalgic comfort films. A familiar comedy can put you at ease, and lessens the struggle. An action film with distract the mind. Both Terminator 2 and 21 Jump Street are good choices.
But knowing my audience, there's probably a good chance that you are just like me. You watch movies that feel nostalgic, but are before your time.
For me, it was the 80s movies. The works of Jackie Chan, Roger Rabbit, Ghostbusters, Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Technically, I didn't grow up with these movies. I wasn't alive when these movies came out.
Instead, they are nostalgic movies for the first generations of online content creators. The first waves of reviewers and online personalities would express their love for these films. And I live that nostalgia through these people.
I can't tell you if I feel nostalgic for the film, or the time I spend watching these old school reviewers. But either way, these films bring me comfort.
That doesn't explain why I find even older movies equally comforting, though. I did not grew up with Monroe movies. And no one told me to watch Hitchcock films. I think we only ever watched Psycho in Film Aesthetic 101. Yet, here I am, enjoying these golden age 50s and 60s movies like an old man. Why?
A big part of it is probably because I went to film school. I don't recall clearly, but I think I was only mildly curious of old classics. Having gone through film school allows me to put the films into its context, which is helpful. But I don't feel particularly nostalgic about my school experience, so... I still have no idea where that nostalgia comes from.
Finally, and this is probably just me. A good sick day movie catalog also includes the work of... Neil Breen. Actually it includes most bargain bin movies. Asylum stuff, Syfy channel stuff, iQiYi and Youku movies, or just random MST3K episodes. They are consistently bad, but always so easily disgestible. Also I don't have to pay attention to them. They make a sick day so much more bearable.
So that's what I watch on a sick day. What do you watch when you get sick? Maybe I should make a video about sick day movies from the East, with a focus on dubbed movies or movies with minimal dialogues.
Anyway, new video will come out in a few days!
