Howdy, wonderful people!

What better way to bejewel a dagger than with dice!  This die-holding weapon of antiquity has room for a six-sided die in the blade and a twenty-sided die in the pommel, and provides room enough in the handle itself to hold a full regular set of dice, too.

The pommel consists of two parts, actually - a cradle that holds a d20 and a screw-in retainer that holds it solidly in place.  Then that whole thing threads into the bottom of the grip to provide style and glamour that'll have goblins sneaking through the forest to get a closer look!

Now, the fit of the d20 is a fairly precise thing.  The die should fit so that it almost falls through, but not quite, and it works by intersecting the side faces, which are at quite a shallow angle.  This means that the difference between almost falling through and not going in at all is very small - hold a d20 up and look at the horizontal distance between the bottom edge and top points of the middle faces and you'll see what I mean!

My d20s are all around 19-ish millimetres across the faces, but dice come in varying sizes, so there are four different pommel pieces that provide 19, 20, 21, and 22mm options.  There's enough tolerance in the threads that you could potentially resize these a little, too, to get a good fit on a particular d20.

The die in the blade is easy to mistake for a tetrahedral d4 but it's actually just a d6 protruding from each side.  The design is made for 16mm (across faces) dice, but there's some tolerance for variability thanks to the way the threaded retainer ring and clamping plate work.  This one is much less complicated than the d20!

Dice Capacity

The grip will hold one average set of dice, but the order they're put in will make a difference to how well they pack in!  I've tried to keep it as compact as possible to stop it rattling too much!

Print Description

This is a print made of screw-together assembled parts.  Tolerances are reasonably generous but you will still want to make sure the thread prints are nice and neat for easy assembly!

Pommel Threads - use a finer layer height

The threads in the pommel area are relatively fine, so you might want to print the D20 caddy and the retention plate with thinner layers (those are very small, so it won't take long even with very fine layers!)

Print Dimensions

The blade is the largest part, and is 67mm x 35mm on the print bed and 180mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

You might find a little messiness in the overhang at the top of where the retaining ring screws into the blade.  In fact, the thread for the ring is missing at the top to avoid deformed threads that might affect assembly.  So, any sagging there shouldn't cause any issues at all, and the ring is designed to hide it anyway!

There's also an overhang in the bottom of the grip piece, but it shouldn't be a problem for most modern printers at all, and it's hidden after assembly, anyway :)

Scalability

This one is not intended for scaling!   You can try, of course, but things won't fit quite the same way :)

Print Orientation

The blade, grip, pommel and guard all print standing right-way-up.  The retaining ring for the blade prints outside-down, and the plate it holds in prints outside-down, too.

Further Thoughts

Just in case you don't want to use dice in the actual dagger, there are versions of the blade and pommel that don't require them!

Happy printing!

just a few comments since I printed this yesterday. All my plastic D20's are about 19.75 mm and the metal ones were 20.75 so I printed the pommel for the 20mm LOL the plastic ones fell right through the metal one fits perfectly but doesn't need the retaining ring at all. Just thought I'd mention this for others, Looks great!!

I love this so much! Joined Instantly when I saw it. Would it be possible to make the handle part a little taller? I would love it if in addition to the ones in the pommel and blade you could fit a full set of 7 dice in it. With all the sets I have tried (regular Chessex size) I was only able to fit about 6.

Turns out, with a bit of finessing, I was able to fit a Chessex set.
