Gecko Star Vase (Patreon)

It's a vase with gecko shapes!

Making things printable in vase mode can be a tricky thing.  It's like designing to avoid overhangs, but it's something that needs to be considered in both upward and downward directions, since we don't have the luxury of infill to handle horizontal ledges or sharp angles.  

This particular model, as well as being an excuse to feature geckoes, is an exploration of making embossed things printable despite reasonably complex geometry.  Of course, we can just keep the embossing very shallow and not worry about angles at all, but where's the challenge in that?

The good old tools like tapered extrusion don't work with things that have so many tight bends and angles, so instead I combined a bunch of non-tapered extruded geckoes together into a kind of fan of gecko goodness that reminds me of some kind of parallel dimension, alternate reality gecko existence.  

Then I put some swirly things on the corners, just because :)

Print Description

This is a vase mode print, so set your slicer accordingly!

Print Dimensions

The Gecko Star Vase occupies 98mm x 100mm on the print bed and is 205mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

This one should scale easily, up or down!  Vase mode is good like that!

Further Thoughts

This actually started out with a completely different intention.  Originally, I was working on a tessellated lizard vase, a la M.C. Escher, from whom I've borrowed that very idea before, but somehow that transformed into cutesy lizards instead.  It's funny how these things evolve!
