Hexagons, is there anything they can't... wait, this one's octagonal!  That's right, wonderful people, it's an eight-sided techno-container with fins, rings, stripes and radiating lines!  I do love some nice, abstract, sci-fi styling!

The Jolt Capsule is an octagonal prism whose upper half unfolds into two lids, and it comes in two styles of closure!  There's the classic threaded ring style, where the two lid halves each carry half the thread of the closure, and a magnetically-secured version that has magnets to hold the lids together, and another set of magnets to hold a latch closed over the top so that the mechanical force of the latch is holding things together, and not just the strength of the magnets.

Both versions are the same other than the closure area (and some interior and exterior detail that makes each version neatly printable!)

Printing Tips

No supports required, of course!

Since this is an articulated model, you'll want to make sure you don't have any printing issues such as stringing or overextrusion that might bind moving parts together!

The models print with the lid segments open flat on either side, and the ring for the threaded version prints upside-down:

A Note on Magnets

The magnetic version of this model uses either two or four 6x3mm cylindrical magnets.  It's only the latch that really needs the magnets - the interior pair that holds the doors together is purely a convenience.

If you're using both sets, though make sure to start with the two magnets in the non-latch side of the lid!  That is, the magnets that sit on either side of the block on one side.  This is because they're close enough to attract and repel each other, and you'll want to make sure they're attracting.  So, get those settled first, then insert the magnets in the latch and the other lid to suit.

Print Dimensions

Both versions occupy 125mm x 168mm on the print bed and are 80mm tall.

The ring to suit the threaded version occupies 50mm x 50mm and is 10mm tall.

Further Thoughts

It's funny how these things evolve during design.  This one originally had handles at both ends, and I still kind of miss that aspect!  I can't deny that it works much better as a design that can be sat on its end, though, for easy picking up by the handle on top.

Still, I do miss the handle, and that's the eternal problem with design - there are so many good directions to go, and for each choice there are so many other fun ones that  were left by the wayside.  Good problems to have, though :)

This is soooo coool! Thanks for another great design! Hoping for some more "boxes" this year for Christmas gifts. The ones last year were great.

There will always be more boxes, but perhaps I should get some gift-specific ones under way!
