I'll still make another epilogue for Ar'Kendrithyst when I feel like it—

BUT FOR NOW YOU GET A WHOLE PART 1 FOR A NEW SERIES.

126k words! the whole thing! in one post!

it's an epub so you need a reader for it; sorry. not putting 126k words into an email.

It's still by me, so it's pretty much the same sort of prose as Ar'Kendrithyst, and there are some numbers and they go up, but it's not the same sort of story.

Vein Cutter is set in an alt-Earth superhero world, with kaiju and walled city-states and a different, more alternate Earth right beside the first one. The main character is a 17-year-old kid named Mark Careed, who gets some bad news when his expected Awakening informs him that if he continues as he had planned he would end up as a brawny with a basic stronger body, just like 90% of every other Earthling who goes through the Tutorial. But if he does something drastic, with potentially dangerous consequences, he could end up with a whole lot more than that.

What to expect:

Slice of life, superheroes, monsters, magic, hard progression, post-apoc, sci-fi, few-but-important numbers (gamelit), difficult times, setbacks, disasters, kaiju, death, sadness, progression, no real cheats, eventual inventive use of powers, eventual politics, eventual real power, eventual superhero

This is the origin part of the story.

What it's like:

Supper Supportive, Ar'Kendrithyst, Changeling

This is PART ONE of BOOK ONE, at 126k words.

Let me know what you think! (and I do mean that! I'll take constructive criticism. Consider yourself a beta reader, or not; up to you~)

I'll eventually start posting this to RR, but you guys get it first.

Okay so I read it. That was basically a novel in and of itself, and it was amazing.I felt like it was a bit of a slow burn to start but the payoff was absolutely worth. I like that it had a good ending point, didn't feel like a cliff at all. Can't wait for part two of book one!

Jackjargon

OK I did it it was awesome! Cried several times ( how dare you the feels) but such a solid start the world building seems so interesting I love the alt future with magic! Kid is having a rough time but has a solid foot on a mountain to come I'm desperate for more!

AlbusScitus

Well that's not an ominous final line at all. Right? .....Right?

blinkmouse

Finished reading it before bed last night. I'll definitely be following, although I'm not typically a big fan of villain stories and I'm a bit curious where it's going next. Is it even going to be the same main character?! I like how you took a lot of mechanical ideas from Super Supportive and fleshed them out in your own style. I assume there's a lot more secrets for the universe to offer, but the universe already seems really deep.

Erik

I really liked it! I was missing a bit of a breakdown about what his talents actually mean, but I assume that will come eventually.

Good read, look fowards to reading more

Joshua clark

Luke

10/10 this was excellent

Roberto Weidmann

It's really good! Congrats! Can't wait for the next chapter!

It’s good! So far it seems like Mark has made like 3 or 4 decisions? and otherwise has just been carried along in the current of everything else. Which is frustrating, but also probably pretty realistic given all the trauma, and that it’s origin story aka pre-superhero, so it works. Also, you left in one “wiikipedia” and a “you you”.

I'm loving this series so far. My only concern is that he's going to have the same problems as Erick from Ar'K, where his entire life is just one big trauma dump that he never solves until the very end. So hopefully he gets over the whole... kill omnipotent dragon agenda sooner rather than later. Dead parents are sad, embrace beng sad instead. I think my only other quirk is that he has fantastical magical power now... and he wants to explore exactly none of it. I can understand those first days when he was in the really deep depression hole, but after that... he was always so excited for superpowers and now that he has them he practically ignores them entirely unless he's running in the gym/track. Especially after he managed to expel the 'bad' astral body exhaustion. That would be my impetus to see what other esoteric things I can clean myself of. Sleepiness? Muscle damage for recovery? Just so much potential and he kinda blows it off.

I just joined, and the way you have the laid put is super confusing
