As I desperately flail around for Patreon content after expending my post buffer, I recalled that I've only shown Work Stages for pages 1-4 and 6 from that Harley Quinn #29 back-up story I wrote and drew for DC earlier in the year. (Ackshully, I finished it last year, but whatevs.) So, take a gander at my process for pages 5 and 7 from "Hyena Anxiety," a surreal and/or nightmarish lil'l episode featuring of ol' Harl confronted by a series of upsetting variations of her pet hyenas Bud and Lou. Story and line art by me, colors by Alejandro Sanchez.

Overall, a fairly enjoyable experience, but sweet Jesus was this story ever time-consuming to grind my way through. Then again, I was reverting to my old, old workflow of roughs/tight pencils/tighter inks on full-size comics artboard, a wildly inefficient process I abandoned way back in 2000 after struggling through the miniseries Dirty Pair: Run from the Future (as discussed in a recent text post).

Not much time for commentary, but...

Note that Harley's straitjacket in panels 1-2 was axed after the pencil stage, which I really should've anticipated:

Note the hand-drawn "pawprint" borders, which grew tiresome in a hurry.

On to page 7, with my favorite HQ pose of the whole story, though only vaguely indicated in the initial page rough:

..but refined in the subsequent tighter rough:

..and the final pencils, with the lower-left HQ figure being my favorite:

Said pose was partially photoreffed, so I got in some bonus Life Drawing:

IIRC, I did a lot of Photoshoppery on this one after scanning in the inks (most glitter dots on the leotards, outline on Cyborg-Hyena's balloon, the ankhs & stars, etc.)

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: No idea, TBH, but something should be coming up in the next M/W/F slot. Let's find out together, shall we?

UPDATE: Ehh, not sure what the heck is going up next, as many options abound. Could be the text piece re: Bubblegum Crisis I recently finished (complete with a shocking-to-me epiphany about BGC: Grand Mal), or a sneak preview of the writing & roughs gig I worked on a few weeks back, or maybe even the first set of suh-weet character designs that an interested artist worked up for my original fantasy-RPG comic pitch from 6-8 years ago (predating anything you've seen here). Let's find out next week, shall we?

Why was it expected the straight jacket would be axed?

BDSM overtones, likely.

Modern comics use the damsel in distress trope much less often, "especially" for main characters.
