In a wacky new Patreon feature I'm gonna be dispersing throughout the month mostly on "off days" between more substantive posts, here are the "March Manga Madness" brackets I worked up and filled out back in 2018, when I apparently had the time to indulge such wacky diversions.

(BTW, the correct title of the #15 seed at lower right is To Your Eternity, of course. Whoops!)

Anyhoo, as the "competition" progresses throughout March, I'll update the brackets every few days and maaaaybe briefly discuss the significance of the manga that either won or lost that day.

Sound cool? Hope so!

You put some tough titles against each other in the first round! Appleseed vs Lone Wolf and Cub? Amazing work but for different reasons.

Nahh, OP never did very much for me; same with DRAGON BALL, whether Z or otherwise.

Always good to know Oh My Goddess ranks on someone's list. I note the lack of Dirty Pair on there, which I assume is because you mostly watched the anime...aside from also, yanno, writing their western comics incarnation. Hmm. Okay, my brain is kind of blowing up here. I never thought of it this way, but do you count as a Dirty Pair mangaka since those were officially licensed comics? I don't know how else I thought of it before, but...oh, wow. You were so far ahead of the curve that I didn't even realize it.

Always like these lists to see the stuff I should pay more attention to. No "Legend of Mother Sarah"? Or is that not contemporary? My idea of what's contemporary foreshortens a lot as I get older :)

Adam's comics predate any Dirty Pair manga; the Lovely Angels originally appeared in light novels. There is a recent manga adaptation of the first light novel, which (to my eyes) took rather a lot of inspiration from Adam's comics, but I get the impression Adam isn't a huge fan. Also, that wasn't released in English until after Adam made the brackets anyhow.

andrew

Thanks. I knew about the light novels and assumed there was a manga because there was an anime, but the timing and Adam's books predating the manga was lost on me. That blows my mind.

No MOTHER SARAH, but the older title AI TO MAKOTO (a hilariously grim and violent high school drama) was drawn by the same artist.

How are the winners determined? It is fascinating to see that Naoki Urasawa and Rumiko Takahashi have to do battle with themselves on the first round. (Urasawa's 20th Century Boys vs. Monster and Takahashi's Maison Ikkoku vs. Ranma 1/2) They may fight themselves again as each creator has 3 titles in contention! Lastly, would you add any titles since the list was created in 2018?

adamwarren

Oh, definitely. Once the brackets are wrapped, I'll rattle off the (probably three or four) new manga titles that I would've subbed in if this list had been compiled in 2022.

Hrm! This seems fun. Looking forward to it!

Interesting how there is both "Alita" and "Last Order", but only "Dominion" without "Conflict 1"
