Behold, following up on my previous post of layout pages from Unnamed Robot Comic (better known as 2004's Marvel mecha-team miniseries Livewires), here are the work stages on a few of the Advanced Idea Mechanics pages from issue #4 that I wound up drawing myself, as opposed to leaving the work to series artist Rick Mays; I did so either for deadline reasons or because the pages in question were heavily technical.

So, in the image gallery above, you'll see my layout page, then my finished pencils, then series inker Jason Martin's B&W inks over my pencils, then coloring studio Guru eFX's final colors.

A few words on the second page:

Note, in panel 1 above, that Social Butterfly was supposed to have "SOCIAL" lettered across the backside of her pants, based on a fashion trend that had started to appear in my slightly behind-the-times neck of the woods in the summer of 2004:'

Alas, I left off the SOCIAL butt-logo because, in Livewires issue #4, we never get a nice. clear look at Social Butterfly's "toothsome rump" (per Empowered's Caged Demonwolf), and this one lousy panel just wasn't adequate to establish the visual riff. (Poor planning on my part, clearly.)

Ah, but later that summer, the butt-logo riff would be applied to Ninjette in the early pages of the unplanned project that would later evolve into Empowered

Note that the page above was a first-draft version of the story introducing Ninjette; here's the revised version you (probably) saw in the published Empowered vol.1:

Anyhoo.

So, tell me, kind Patrons: Does seeing the Work Stages on my Unnamed Robot Comic pages do anything for ya? The Livewires layouts already get the fewest likes of any of this Patreon's recurring features, so I'm a tad doubtful as to whether you'd wanna see more of this spinoff feature. Lemme know what you think, okay?

And now, back to work on Empowered vol.12, after I clamber down into the cellar and spray Liquid Wrench lube onto the bearings of my furnace's annoying squeaky fan. (Ughh.)

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: At the moment I'm not quite sure what's going up when, thanks to the semi-randomized "M/W/F+" posting schedule I'm using nowadays.

I always enjoy seeing the creative process, so I’ve really been digging these work stages. I’m all for you continuing this, sir!

Yeah i enjoy process-related and behind the scenes stuff as well. (For this set I’m surprised i like the tight pencil stage most, perhaps it’s the closest to the Empowered style?)

I'm definitely a fan of the backstage process stuff

I'm enjoying the backstage looks in general, and seeing Livewires especially. The sheer _lack_ of difference in the pencils versus the final version is impressive. There's usually a big difference from the roughs to final inked version, but Livewires is almost 'just need colors inked' to be print-ready.

I don't always remember to click the like button, but I love these little windows into your thought process

You know, as somebody who has spent a considerable amount of time in South Jersey, Ninjettes shorts are actually pretty regionally accurate; that is recognizably a Shore boardwalk fashion to my eyes. Also, one thing I would like to see more of is some writing process stuff; I liked the story notes stuff you used to put up, and I think you hinted at the existence of some of that for other comics.

I love these posts! The more WIPs, the better for me!
