So!

I had forgotten that, six or seven months ago (or longer), I was gradually working my way backward through the posting the work stages for the cover illos of Empowered. (The last one I tackled was vol.9, but I don't feel like dragging my ass through this site's sprawling archive of posts to find it.)

To fill today's open slot in the weekly schedule, I was planning to post the work stages for vol.8's cover, which has always been a bit of a disappointment to me—but then I realized that I might as well go in strict backwards order and post the process images for the book's back cover, which I like much more!

Note that "intact Mindf**k" (from the ruthlessly tearjerking final pages of the volume) was originally gonna wear the schoolgirl outfit from her appearance in Sistah Spooky's memories in this illo, but I decided against that for reasons now forgotten. (Might be that I found this too repetitive of the very similar "schoolgirl Emp" back cover from vol.5.)

UPDATE: Just remembered a goofy detail from this piece: I now recall very slightly flattening the curve of Hannah's profiled behind, the idea being that she's not quite as curvy back there as, say, Emp. (If you look very closely at the schoolgirl-uni pencils and final costume inks, you can spot the barely perceptible reduction.) No doubt a tear ran down my grizzled face as I made this wrenching sacrifice to theoretical butt-profile continuity, which I later ignored completely in her in-volume appearances. (Whoops.)

Final colors on the piece by Rob "Robaato" Porter, by the way!

TOMORROW ON THIS HERE PATREON: The Wednesday Distressed Damsels feature (for the $5+ tiers) features a bunch of Empowered vol.7 pages and the rough sketches (and doodled commissions) that had their Emp poses recycled for publication. Work stages too, in effect!

There is no such thing as too many school girl pics. That having been said, it feels more fitting that we see her in this outfit because it is the one that she died in. The juxtaposition with the outfit and the smile and her still intact eyes just highlights some key bits of her character and personality in that one image.

Still suffering the evil genius that my favourite comic character ever is a swear word. Why did Mindfuck have to die in the *one* comic universe where it isn't a minor deadcation? And in fact gets to poignantly die AGAIN saving her love from escalating neuroloops? At least we'll always have the Mad Max alterna-chronoscape.

I love this drawing. I remember when i first got the book and saw it on the back and thought to myself, "Wait, what? WHY" The reason broke my heart.
