August art request sketch dump #1! (Patreon)
Content
Based on August art requests solicited from the Big Spenders of the higher tiers, here's the first clump o' sketches relating to those suggestions. (Worry not, everyone else, you'll get your chance for requests next week.)
Above is a quick, 45-minute set drawn in the Procreate art app, featuring an Emp sketch based on an undeniably iconic Raquel Welch image; the nasal-centric rest of the set is made up of facial studies influenced by several artists with varying approaches to blurring the line between a sterotypical "manga/anime face" and a more (semi-)realistically rendered face. Gotta keep on grindin' away at the digital larnin', folks!
Below are some existing con sketches that happened to feature characters suggested by Patrons. One request was "Emp cosplaying as Lum," which I've drawn twice before (and will very likely draw again, later this month):
Urusei Yatsura was my life-changing introduction to both anime and manga, so I'm always down for drawing a little Lum, even if only a cosplay version. In fact, below is a very similarly posed Lum, drawn during the same year. What can I say, folks? Repetition is a very real issue with sketches drawn at a con, as I'm invariably happy to get anything down on paper. One of the cruel ironies of the 11" X 14", two-color format I use for these pieces is the fact that I'm very, very uncomfortable drawing figures at this size; the results, however, tend to look more impressive than they actually are, hence my continued use of the rather awkward format.
Another request was for YT from Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash. Lo and behold, I happen to have drawn the character way back at a Toronto FanExpo:
Sadly, the photo was taken with my old(er) phone, hence the rather crappy quality.
Another request was for Reed and Sue from Fantastic Four, which I will very likely tackle in a future August image dump. Here, however, is a recent Sue sketch that, I'm afraid, did not turn out to my satisfaction:
I wasn't kidding when I said that, most of the time at a convention, I'm glad to get anything even semi-decent down on paper, given how different both the con format and work environment are from my usual preferences.
Anyhoo, stand by for more Procreate sketch dumps later on in the month, okay?
