The Okama culture hates to be seen as trans, they take pride in being men and want to be seen as men but their culture is about them dressing up to express themselves appearance-wise only, has nothing to do with gender or sex or any of that. You can find commentary on this in various places by Japanese men who speak for the okama culture. And regarding Kiku, he's a dude, he doesn't trick people into thinking he's a woman, nor does he tell people to see him as one, when people find out he's a man, he doesn't demand they address him as a woman. Also he's a brother to Izo and acknowledges himself as one. It's just that he's very feminine at heart, this is does not make you trans nor a woman. Another point I want to mention, Oda decided to have such a character in Wano, not because it's 2023 and he's progressive but because such people were occurrent in feudal Japan, men who would either use their femininity to escape the samurai culture or to act as geishas in times of hardship. I find it extremely disrespectful that Oda has put such fine details of traditional Japanese culture in Wano, most of which goes over people's head unless they are familiar with the culture and history - which is fine - but when western viewers see things like this they immediately project their ideologies and western culture onto it.

i have to admit i get nervous seeing peoples' reactions to kiku's reveal as a trans woman, but you're good people, man

Kiku isn't even trans in the modern definition. He dresses and acts feminine but doesn't believe he is a girl. The japanese have a very different culture regarding all of this, it is best not to project western culture on to it.

She does believe she is a girl. This isn’t a Yamato situation, even in the manga she’s shown to be with the girls in multitude of “girls only” situation. If the line “I’m a girl inside” isn’t trans, idk what is. Also, Japan has trans people, it’s a known thing, do you think it’s on western? You think Ivankovs DF And what Odas lines like “two mothers and 1 daughter what’s wrong with that” are things only in the west? You’re talking about a manga where the writer himself stated the characters come from a multitude of nationalities, and most of his narratives are derived from the real world. To get at this person because being trans is “western” is plain retarded. This isn’t a woke thing, but come on dude, no one in the OP community has ever said Kiku ISNT trans, it’s not even a debate, so idk where you got this dumb take from.”Modern definition” no shit, it’s the land of wano she is not going to start taking hormones and attempting surgery to fit your arbitrary definition of ‘trans’

thanks for saying it in a more articulate way than i could haha. what's so hard to understand about "are you a man?" "i'm a woman at heart" like... what else do people think that means
