I think you are correct about it being like Alice in Wonderland I think I read somewhere Oda used that and Hansel & Gretel as references for this arc. I think the chess piece soldiers are supposed to be like the card soldiers from Alice in Wonderland

All I have to say is worldbuilding it's crazy each arc how oda manages to create a completely unique island(s). First episodes on a new island are some of my favourites just seeing all the new shit. Plus all the singing shit reminds me of a scary beauty and the beast but big mom is the beast and there aren't really many beauties

I forget where I first saw it, but I think the theory that the Straw Hats and the Red-Haired Pirates will have a Davy Back fight to allow Luffy to prove his strength to Shanks without actually fighting him makes a ton of sense. It would give the Long Ring Long Land arc, which is otherwise kind of meaningless, retroactive long-term significance, which Oda is kind of great at doing.
