People defend the Usopp being overly cowardly here because Robin got turned and he forgot about Sogeking, but he was being this way BEFORE she got turned, thinking of running away even when they're in this deep. It'd be like if he seriously thought of running away for real when they were in Alabasta. Arguably, Robin turning only made it worse, but by Ruff's reaction (which I agree with), his attitude is so painfully old Ussop, that it's one of the negative points in this arc in my opinion.

Brian

Ussop forgot about Robin instantaneously. Which means everything that comes with that. He made Sogeking in his mind to overcome his fear and shame at challenging Luffy. His bravery stepped up big time in that arc. Now it's all gone. In an instant. Of course he reverted back to his cowardly self before he really stepped up his game in the story.

I had the same feelings with Usopp when watching these episodes. I was so mad at him and disappointed that the growth that he had seemed to make over the last 5ish arcs seem to disappear and he reverted to his base character.

Not that this will fully acquit Ussop, but Robin being turned into a toy means a lot more than losing a person who can fight. Ussop's main character development and bravery has mainly been shown through Water 7 and Enies Lobby, two arcs very much centered around Robin. During this time, Ussop developed Sogeking, a personality that could be brave when he wasn't. In the post time-skip, thanks to that development, he doesn't need that anymore. HOWEVER, because that entire development was wiped from his head for the most part due to Robin becoming a toy, he lost that courage and became more scared than he has possibly ever been. Still, he should have been helping way before Robin stepped in. There was a bit of character assassination regardless.

Ussop here really pissed me off. For me there is no way that this was excusable. For all those who are saying that it was because of Robin turning into a toy, he forgot all his character development in Enies Lobby that's a load of bull. He was being a mega coward all arc, and even before Robin was turned into a toy, he didn't help at all. Robin helped Leo not get caught, lured Trebol out, and sacrificed herself to give the Tontatas a chance to save the day and was punished for it. Ussop did not lift a finger. The moment Robin was forgotten he ran and I can attribute some truth to the character development loss but for me it was not just Robin who helped him in Enies Lobby. He created Sogeking to overcome his fears and help Robin sure, but he said it himself to "Believe in Luffy" I am not sure why he could not see that the Tontattas believe in Kyros as much as he believes in Luffy here and help them on his own, truly disgusting for him to do.

I absolutely agree. It blew mind with the whole Robin memory loss thing, but rewatching this arc, it stands on very weak legs and he absolutely was acting unexcusably well before this point in time. I get that he along with others like Nami and Chopper are weaker and have a stronger sense of self-preservation and may not be able to act in a snap like the others, but we've seen time and time again, they can get their act together when it matters and they DON'T runaway, so this really hurt Ussopp in my opinion despite what comes ahead.

I wasnt aware of this fact the first time I watched this arc but after rewatching it while knowing the details it really makes it much more real with those extra unmentioned details Oda throws in there from time to time

Love your reaction on Kyros reveal <3

Oda is an exceptional story-teller. He did mention that he liked underdog so he liked Usopp and he was gonna do great thing to underdog. But Oda would not tell a normal cliche legendary hero story. He loves to troll us and make us stressed (just kidding). But what Oda really wanted to express was that Usopp knew his weakness and problem. He made a confession and repent that he lied, he fled, he was cowardice, before and then worthy to have something miracle to work on him. He is weak and timid; but he is brave enough to confess and repent, brave enough to face the all-mighty enemy again. That's what it was powerful. But I totally understood it was really hard to watch because I did too. I am proud of my boy USopp and he repeatedly prove himself worthy to be a Strawhat.

So, knowing what we know in the future, no spoiler... how does Trebol survive Ussop's attack here?

The truck

yeah, I agree. The one "problem" in Usopp's character that wasn't really "fixed" in the water 7/enies lobby was his tendencies to lie about himself. And in this arc, Usopp got too deep into his lies that eventually all the trust and expectations were just too much for a fake persona. And about how Usopp is not a real hero like Noland, he wasn't a real hero that could protect the tontatta's just got him in such panicking stage of trying to run away. But he was able to overcome it and got to the conclusion, that he isn't a hero, but he will become one. And this time without lies. The scene is always so hard to watch, but I feel like a proud parent every time I see Usopp getting back on his feet and coming back to save everyone.

In Usopp forgetting Robin thus reverting his character progression (I believe it has to do more with progression than development) I pretty much agree with everyone's statements. You may not like it, but Usopp forgot about Robin and felt alone and didn't know what to do. The part I want to talk about the most is Usopp's behavior before Robin became a toy. Yes, Usopp has become strong but that doesn't mean he will be brave nor be the first one into battle like Luffy. Ultimately Usopp wants to be like Luffy - a brave warrior of the sea - thus he isn't going to be brave after the time skip because once Usopp is brave it will end his character acr. If you think about water 7/Enies Lobby Usopp went to battle for Luffy and Robin, he didn't go against the World Government because he wanted to. He helped to declare war for Luffy. In Thriller Bark Usopp was always scared and didn't want to go on the enemy ship. Usopp only built courage because he knew he was the only one who could defeat Perona. In the fight, he becomes one with Sogeking to face his fears and focus on how to defeat Perona when she looked like she was unbeatable. In Sabaody Usopp was only "brave" against Kizaru when Zoro was about to die. He tried his best to protect HIS FRIEND. After that arc in the 2-year time skip, Usopp was working on becoming stronger for Luffy, not trying to be BRAVE. In Fishman Island, Usopp was normal the entire time and wasn't any braver than when he was in Sabaody. The biggest difference was that he was STRONGER and was following his captain's orders. Luffy wanted to beat Hoddy and help the fishmen. In punkhazard Ussop was the same in not wanting to go to the island. He only helped the children because Nami WANTED to. If it were up to Usopp he would have left the children in the lab. But because Nami related to the orphan children she made the decision to help them and she wasn't going to back down. Then it was Luffy's desire to team up with Law to defeat Ceaser. Ussop was only "Brave" against Buffalo and Baby5 when they were running away. So it wasn't a face-to-face dual and the enemy was already banged up by Fanky. In Dressrosa the plan is to get in, have Dofalmingo quit the 7worldlords, destroy the factory, and leave. This isn't Alabasta where the crew wants to help Vivi take back her country, nor do they have the emotional attachment they created with Vivi. The only reason they decide to fight Doflamingo was that Franky wanted to. Franky makes the decision to help the tontadas and Luffy says yes. Franky isn't forcing Usopp to help as Nami did in Punk Hazard. Usopp wasn't fighting for Luffy like in Fishman Island. Ussop was not given an order, nor does he have the motivation to help like in Little Garden when he meet the giants from Elbath. He isn't even fighting for his team because they are not in any danger. Zoro was in danger in Sabaody and Robin in Enies Lobby. In addition to this, his role here isn't as important as in Thriller Bark, if Usopp lost against Perona then the entire crew would have been eliminated. Here Nami and the others left for Zou, Luffy is heading to Doflamingo, Zoro and Fanky are in their own fights. The importance of this fight against Sugar is to create problems for Doflamingo and the country, not to help a specific straw hat nor to protect them. What Usopp needs is a personal desire to help the tontadas, because if he doesn't then he won't help them. That is my defense for Usopp, you may or may not agree to it but I hope I gave you some insight

Juan Carlos Jaimes Jr.

Side note. I don't want to say you can't be frustrated or disappointed in Usopp. I love your reaction Ruff, this is amazing content, and can't wait to see more. My previous comment is to explain how I saw Usopp and why I personally wasn't upset with Usopp. Great video and lets watch some more!

Josh Lomax

Completely agree bit a little addition... Usopp is a sniper, sniper's are best and at their bravest at a distance because that's where they're comfortable. It's unreasonable for people to want Usopp to be brave in a head to head fight
