The thing about this movie is that it's heavily based on Japanese folklore so it's a bit confusing if you're not familiar with it. It also borrows from other mythologies too. I recommend a second watch & pay attention to the details it's quite touching and it always makes me cry 😢 It's my second favorite ghibli movie My first fave is HOWLS MOVING CASTLE It's probably simpler for Westerns to understand but it's such a good film 10/10

The scene with the stink spirit is actually a very beautiful reference to the pollution of nature. Ghibli is very concerned about nature and it's pollution. - The spirit was actually a river spirit, but it became a stink spirit because of human pollution, which is shown with the bike and all the trash that was stuck inside him. Once he was cleansed, he became his true self again

"No Face" is also an interesting character. His name indicates that he has no independant personality / He doesn't have his OWN face. - He mimics or absorbs the Face/personalities of others. That's why he was overcome with greed and gluttony when he was surrounded by the workers, because they only focus on gold, food and themselves. That is also the reason he constantly is drawn to Chihiro, because she is the only pure and truly kindhearted person in the place. He DESIRES to be good, which is why he becames friendly and peaceful around Chihiro after leaving the spa and at Yababa's sister's place.

Aside from An American Werewolf in London, this is my favorite movie. It's just exactly what I want out of two hours.

Out of all the Ghibli movies you'd probably enjoy Princess Mononoke the most.

2021-07-08 19:45:46 My personal top favorite Ghibli/Miyazaki movies 1. Laputa: Castle in the Sky 2. Princess Mononoke 3. Howl’s Moving Castle 4. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind 5. Kiki’s Delivery Service 6. The Secret World of Arrietty 7. Spirited Away 8. My Neighbor Totoro 9. Whisper of the Heart 10. The Wind Rises 11. Ponyo Nausicaa is actually not done by Studio Ghibli, but it might as well be since it's directed and written by Miyazaki Hayao. Also, some of the dubs are decent, but I still ultimately prefer Japanese. There's more immersion and authenticity for me that way. Also, Laputa was Ghibli's first animated full length movie, and came out a couple years after Nausicaa.

2021-07-08 19:45:46 Also, in any anime, never assume that anybody's dead without having seen them actually die or without the anime explicitly saying or implying that they're dead. You should know that by now XD Lin is best girl.
