I still have not played Apex Legends, but I've also never played Fortnight or PUB-G, so I've clearly missed the zeitgeist about the whole battle-royal thing. I'm just not good at shooters. I don't think quickly. I really like to take my time. X-Com 2 is a lot of fun for me, as are the Total War games, and I'm thinking of getting back into Civ, but I keep holding it off another month. 

I'm actually not in love with the characters designs in Apex legends. They all look like generic assets you'd see in the background of a game (someone told me that the whole game is a lucky asset flip, which I believe). The idea that they're supposed to be unique characters just seems . . . I don't know . . . Lazy? 

I shouldn't compare it to Overwatch, but I'm going to. Overwatch has (mostly) amazing character designs. They're so good that the designs were made before the characters' stories were finalized. I LOVE that. Let the visuals lead the project, then come back and figure out the "lore" when its convenient.
