It turned out that the right thing to do was to put the pinecone in the oven on low heat for 3 hours!

Seeds came out, and I should have been smarter with cooking them, they burnt :/

For me it was just letting it sit on the shelf for a week or so, when it slowly opened. I still had to pry every single seed out of it. Next time I'll just buy the seeds.

With the unfortunate burning, should it have been a different temp or a different time or both? I ask as I now missy try and find my own grocery pinecones out possible...

Pine kernels like the ones used in pesto?

The kernels used in pesto come from a specific pine cone. I've never seen how the pine cone looks or how the kernels look without the husk but that was my thoughts seeing your pine cone.
