Finally... The Mona piece is done!

Had a blast on that one, learned a few stuff by experimenting and playing around with it!

I’m thinking of a way to post files to you guys without having any leaks, that’s why there hasn’t been a lot of posts lately... I’ll try something with the Patreon chat function, but I’ll make sure to find something pretty soon! The process on this one can be quite interesting!

So about AI... Things are getting quite serious tbh

The AIs are still progressing when it comes to 2D art... Videos are getting out of hand, communities are trying to kill each other on Twitter... A lot is happening

There are two videos that I saw which really comforted me in the beliefs I had about all this, it’s the Mutahar’s take on Asmongold’s take about AI (a quite interesting take about a hot one) and another video explaining why Shadiversity isn’t an artist.

The first one talks about the consumers, the other one gives a definition of what you are if you prompt an AI compared to an artist, and has a little take on why it’s problematic in the industry. I think all this shows that the main problem here, which is quite always the same, is money.

Would people pay for a game made by an AI? If so, why would big companies keep recruiting artists when they can « do the work » on their own for free? Even when it comes to freelance artists... Why should you pay them, if all you got to do is take their work, and put it into a machine? All that for free.

With how good these little Terminators wannabe are getting, it’s harder and harder to say what’s human and what’s not. So all these questions are left unanswered, and what is scarier that unanswered questions...

My take on all this... is actually evolving with time, but for now, that’s how I see it:

One guy said once: you can’t stop progress. And I guess he’s right, unless we destroy Skynet for good, these things will keep evolving...

The main problem being money, I think we should find a way to label AI art as such. To the question will people pay for an AI piece, I can answer... maybe. But how many? Would people really be into paying for something you can have for free? That anyone can do with a few words? I don’t think so...

I think money should go towards work and sweat, not a tool made for fun... Like I said way earlier, it’s scammy.

For the freelance guys, Idk if their work will be deeply impacted... Only time will tell, I don’t have a clear answer to that yet.

For me, I think it’s quite interesting... Could an AI emulate MY work when all I do everytime is emulating other artists style? Idk, time will tell also...

A thought I have about that part, AI stealing people’s art... I think it’s problematic because of money again, otherwise my workflow would be problematic as well! Otherwise, how comes something as flattering as inspiring other artists to draw like you be so cursed nowadays? (For AIs at least)

So yeah, maybe there are other problems that I don’t see with this (I didn’t talk about fakes and political stuff, let’s stay on the artist pov), but for me the major problem is buisness, and this is why we should state what’s AI and what’s not. Also, if there’s one thing we should not allow, is selling stuff made by an AI.

That sums up what I think is going on, and how we should go. Ai could be a pretty useful tool (I think it has a good potential to give a lot of inspirations/ideas) for artists, but we should be careful not to destroy our big business (same for artsits like me, it doesn't feel fair to use another artist artstyle to do commissions for example). Regulating it without excess sounds appropriate.

Last thing I’d like to mention, I feel like this piece is interesting on a motivation level. I saw a few AI pictures that clearly destroy my level when it comes to Art. Sure, it still has a few errors here and there, but I still wouldn’t be able to draw like this on my own... That’s apparently the case for a lot of beginners, who I saw wanted to quit drawing because AI could do it way faster with way more ease.

Art is fun, Idc if an AI can produce it in no time and beat me. Other artists already do that out there, why should I be worried about a machine doing it as well?

You should do art because you want to progress for yourself. Use everything at your advantage (don’t take it too far tho) to progress. If somebody draws better than you, use that gape to learn a thing or two. That’s how you feel good about art, that’s how you become a big artist!

I still won’t use AI myself of course, I don’t feel like quitting grinding art. Blood and tears all the way for me I guess 😎

Thanks for reading through this, if you agree or disagree feel free to comment again! If you have thoughts to add, share them as well. It's a scary but very interesting topic, that I feel like insults and Twitter wars won't really resolve. I want to give this a place for debate, so let's do just that!

Toad Stoole

Well I already talked about it on the other post so you know how I feel about it. For the leak prevention thing, I’ve seen people have success with password protected files on Mega.nz. You send the password and the file as a dm or have the file in a post and dm the password

Seriously gorgeous piece, love how this turned out! For the AI stuff, I'm generally in agreement with you. I think that art should reflect the work that the artist has put in and their aesthetic preferences, and AI skips both of those parts. I also think that taking inspiration from someone else's art and emulating their style is completely fine when done by a human, since they are still producing the art with their own hands, making it fundamentally theirs. AI doesn't think for itself and simply copies the elements it's told to by an algorithm, which is totally different if you ask me. So in short, I'm super happy to see such a lovely Mona piece from you, and I'm glad that you're not letting AI discourage you from grinding out your own art skills with your own hands. Keep it up!

That’s a good way put it! It’s interesting that you can have pretty much anything done by an algorithm nowadays (on a technical level), but it sure doesn’t taste the same at all... Glad you enjoyed the piece! 😎
