Content

After getting a lot of really good applications I have started work with someone who will be helping me ramp up production on tutorial and video content. I won't spoil their identity just yet but I'm very much looking forward to sharing their work with you all. They're already doing some very cool stuff.

Yesterday as a kind of trial project I wrote the code for a Ledge Grabbing tutorial for platformers, I then recorded the audio and the step by step footage and just sort of... gave it to my new editor, so instead of spending today and probably tomorrow on editing that together it's now just... being made?? Off of one day's work by me? A very strange feeling!

Today I plan to record another episode of the GameMaker surgery, and then the rest of the week I can spend on the Turn Based Battle code! Just writing the code for that tutorial is what has been the biggest hold up on it. And then my need to create regular content means I have to keep putting it on hold and it never gets done! The same problem slowed down the ARPG series and other "big" tutorials. So this is a great step towards being able to tackle bigger things a lot more sustainably.

Obviously, you can all see what I make here on Patreon and it's not enough to pay myself and an editor full time. And I will be doing some content by myself still initially. But I am willing to invest a chunk of my own savings in delivering a big boost to my work and which I am hoping will drive up my Patreon pledges so that we *can* sustain this work long term. I am eventually considering a rework of my current goals to something like the following:

  • $1500 - I can keep making videos and content!
  • $2500 - I can pay my editor to help make stuff better!
  • $3000 - I can pay my editor full time!
  • $4000 - Ad free videos!

Anything I earn over the $2k mark I no longer really need to sustain myself and my mortgage etc, and can funnel directly to getting my editor to do more work.

This would mark the... third time? I've increased the ad-free goal but it really does seem like that doesn't interest many of you anyway. My presumption is there's a lot of indifference, adblock, youtube premium or other reasons for that but it stands to reason that I should instead promote a goal we all care strongly about which is more videos and better videos. It's really weird that I've never considered this as a goal before, but I think I've always been anxious about bringing anyone else this deep into my video work.

Anyway, I won't actually change this until we've all had chance to see what a difference this will make to my work and prove how worthwhile it would be to keep up forever. But this is to let you know my vision and general Hopes and Dreams for the future of my work.

PokeyPoke is also going great! I've recently finished my first proper draft of level design for the largest zone of the game. I've given myself a lot to do, but my confidence in the game is rising all the time. I'm trying to stream more so keep an eye on twitch and youtube if you're interested in that!
